Village Inn

Hello oh-wise-and-all-knowing ones

While browsing the technological marvel known as the Internut,I came across a reference to something called “Village Inn” – which was gunlaying radar fitted to Lancasters in late 1944.

To date most articles found are virtually similar to this one:

I was wondering if anybody knows how successful it was?

Also, was there some sort of IFF involved to stop the tailgunner blindly taking down friendly, neighbourhood, Mossies/Halifaxes/Lancs etc?

Thanks

Rory

Probably the first poster to use APP on this Forum! 😀

Wonder when the word will appear in the dictionary?

Or even http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_Gun-Laying_Turret

The usual retort at this point to the OP – ‘is why not just Google it yourself’!! However – in this festive season I would not dream of saying that 😀

There’s an app for that..

The IFF was by way of the Infra Red emitters, called “Z equipment” that was fitted to the nose of RAF bombers (it’s visible on Lancasters as two black discs on the bomb aimer’s cupola). There was a receiver on the turret that would detect this.

From what I have read, it was a pretty successful design, although there were some issues such as the blip bouncing around due to the propellers of the attacking fighter being detected.
