Vimy update

My man in Newfoundland came through with pictures and info today.

I thought that members of the forum maybe interested in an update. According to Mark Rebholz, the navigator. They’re patiently ‘antsy’ to get
going- it looks like on Monday that they’ll have their 3-day ‘window’, and
they’ll be off!.
Hopefully the weather will cooperate now, as it seems that they get one chance a week to go.

Re the field landing in Ireland. They had to buy the crop so they could cut it down and take off again.
As Paul said she is due to stay hangared although there is a vague possibility of another public appearance before she goes “home”

Some of us got to play with the Vimy at Turweston…. 😀
She arrived Saturday eveing and departed about 3-4PM on Sunday.
On departure to Dunsfold she met up with the Flitzer that was at FFF for some air to air.
Fantastic experience to be able to “work” this aircraft….

Thanks Paul

Cheers Paul – that explains it, we were in Lewes town itself, and so were probably the wrong side of the South Downs to see her 🙁

Re East vs West – No probs, only winding you up. We’ve lived in Lewes for 18years now, and are still viewed as outsiders by the “locals” 😀

Melvyn – thanks for the info (and a very belated thanks for your commentary at there Wings ‘n Wheels Display)

Paul,

What time did it fly over ? 😮 😮 😮

I live in Lewes (it’s in East Sussex by the way 😉 ), was also at a BBQ there yesterday afternoon, but missed seeing the Vimy 😡

Paul F

Ok – So I do not know my East from West Sussex – I was a tourist after all.!!.

She flew over late afternoon 4 o’clock ish.. And we were actually just north of Lewis (at Cooksbridge)

How on earth did I miss seeing her???!!!!!

Suppose I must’ve been too busy turning and burning the ‘bangers 🙁 .

(Luckily I saw the Vimy fly at Farnborough a few years ago before she flew down to Oz – a remarkable sight 😮 , rather like an airborne galleon under sail)

Cheers

I saw here flying over Lewis, West Sussex yesterday afternoon, while I was at a Bar-B-Q…… Boy was that a surprise, and it was a good job, I was on hand to CORRECTLY identify the type before everyone else went off home saying they had seem a Lancaster.. 🙂

Why on earth didn’t this get more publicity? Didn’t see a thing on the News and don’t think it even made Sky News. What a wasted opportunity for a news story? BTW, thought it was due to come to Duxford this weekend?

Sky news did have some stuff but not many other places did.

As a brief update, the last I heard (soon after 5pm) is that they successfully flew the Vimy out of the cornfield this morning – apparantly near Tipperary not Waterford – and were heading for Northants by late afternoon expecting to arrive at Turweston early evening. Did anyone see or hear the Vimy over Wales or SW England this afternoon?

The Vimy departed Shannon on Friday heading for England, but bad weather caused them to make a precautionary landing in a cornfield outside Waterford. They were hoping to make an appearance over the Grand Prix at Silverstone tomorrow but it looks unlikely at the moment.
