'Vintage a/c' at the Hall and Lake today.

As it was a fantastic day down here, I pleased myself and went off to buy some aquatic plants in Wyevales in Bury St Edmunds, only to find that they don’t sell them anymore, so don’t waste your time Moggy.
Taking advantage of the situation I went to Lakenheath, apart from the usual earsplitting take offs from the resident F-15’s, the 2 vintage types, now they are past 25, was a couple of Luftwaffe Tornadoes, most interesting, I thought that their takeoffs were much noisier.
Next, over to the Hall and sitting near the terminal was a much paint faded C-5 Galaxy next to a C-117, it looked much bigger than it’s larger capacity replacement, there can’t be many of these old boys left, I presume someone knows how much life they have left.

A C117 at Mildenhall….that certainly qualifies as vintage!

Was it the ghost of NAVY 17171?

I also remember 17108 and 17191 and the C-54 91998 as being regular visitors to Turnhouse in the early 70’s

Tonadoes…vintage?? Bah!

:diablo: Showing your age, but I fully understand the sentiment. It was only last week they finally named the MRCA as the Tornado, isn’t it?

Loud, ha – these boys haven’t lived. A Lightning in reheat going vertical – now that’s loud. A Phantom in a powered climbing turn on fully reheat, now that’s loud. A 4 ship Vulcan launch – now that’s loud. Tornado, that can’t even make a baby cry! Setting off car alarms from two miles away, that’s loud.

Christ! I read the title of this thread and thought a ‘Globie’ had been restored to fly or the Naval Air Facility had resurrected a Beech C-45:rolleyes:

Using the rules the VAC use (and others) they are only “Classic”. They don’t become “Vintage” until 40 years….;) 😀 😉 😀 😉

I forgot to mention that, while I was at Lakenheath, I could see a large formation of a/c in 2 groups flying at altitude along with the civil airliners heading east. I observed them through the bins and judging by their apparent red colour, came to the conclusion that it was the Reds, would they be off to Cyprus for the annual practice session, must have looked impressive from one of the airliners. Thinking about it, it’s unusual to see such a large formation at altitude leaving vapour trails, closest thing to imagining what it must have been like over Suffolk in the 40’s, and that was only 9 or 10 a/c yesterday.
