I am visiting the Lubeck / Hamburg / Bremen / Oldenburg area next month, primarily to re-unite a Halifax wirless operator with the Luftwaffe night-fighter pilot who shot him down in 1945!
Can anyone suggest any aviation sights of interest around that area please? Airfield with interesting aeroplanes, museums, memorials, whatever.
Thanks in advance.

Not too far off your track is a museum in Hannover-Laatzen (www.luftfahrtmuseum-hannover.de). They have a Spitfire, a Bf109G-2 and the conly complete Fw 190 in Germany. The two latter are based on recovered and new-built parts, but look excellent. There is an airfield in Oldenburg-Hatten, which I believe is quite active vintage-aircraft-wise; but don’t expect any heavy-metal warbirds on any airfield in this area. You may want to try the forum in my signature; some of the members are active pilots in that area….

Hi Steve,
If the Junkers W33 should be still in Bremen, then You can find it in a Hangar on top of the Terminal Building ( it´s part of the publik Sightseeing area ). I was there myself about 2 Years ago, it was fantastic to see that historic Aircraft.
Maybe there is a chance to see parts of the Fw 200 C-3 KF+QC WN.0063, they work at them at the Lufthansa Maintenance facilities in Hamburg – Fuhlsbuettel Airport. This is of cause a maintenance repair Shop and no Museum – but Phone (+)49-40-5070-0 and ask for “Lufthansa Berlin Stiftung”; maybe they can help You. They are also responsible for the Ju 52 “D-AQUI” and a Me 108 Taifun.

Yes it is, somewhere in the terminal, you have to pay a entry fee, but therefore the presentation is pretty nice. Btw, it is the original Bremen, the first aircraft to fly Europe-America nonstop!
It should be in the US again right now, but for some reason it is still in Bremen, the US don’t seem to hurry to get it back. So hurry…

Wow, Junkers W33 at Bremen airport! Is it on public view?

James,
Yes, I must check on those. I am really excited about the meeting; it has taken a long time to track down the German pilot with any degree of certainty, and we have done that now.
The guy I am taking with me is now one of just two survivors from the crew and is very keen to meet his former adversary.
For sure, the whole meeting will be well recorded on sound and film, and I will be happy to report back.
thanks for the interest.

Hi Steve,
Get hold of ‘European Wrecks & Relics’ and Bob Ogden’s Aircraft Museums of the World – I think Germany is in the Bennelux, Scandinavia and Northern sates one, but I could be wrong. Both worth having to hand!
Any chance of a report back about the meeting afterwards? Sounds like it’ll be interesting.
Hope it all goes well.
Cheers
