Vintage Glider Club Rally

This is probably a really stupid question but……..

The Vintage Glider Club are having there Rally just down the road from me this week and I’m keen to learn about them and see the different gliders that are there but if you look on there website and/or the one for the gliding club at Gransden at no point does it mention any access for Jo Public. So my question is….

Does anybody know if us curious aviation enthusiasts are welcome at this event or is it a strictly private club members only do??

I know perhaps I should have e-mailed them earlier but, well I’m a bit rubbish. 😮

The last time i remeber a Tiger Moth aerotowing at a vintage rally at Dunstable was in the early 1980’s. I have a photo of my dad flying my old Grunau Baby 111 behind a Tiger on tow, Can’t remeber the year.

Having spent many years trying to ‘grow up’ in Dunstable, one got quite blasé in respect to seeing ‘old’ gliders flying in the vicinity. I now live close to another well known gliding site and can testify that there are still many old gliders flying.

No doubt G-ASEA can remember a vintage gathering at Dunstable and they used a Tiger Moth (long after LGC retired theirs) to ariel tow? Thankfully the wind was easterly, so the Tiger was over the town regularly. My guess late 70’s or early 80’s?

I also remember LGC (London Gliding Club) having Tigers (just), but actually recall G-AWJJ better, the first plane I really saw and identified from there. Add to that, G-AYFE.

I went over to the rally for a couple of hours today, My family are members of the VGC. The Slingsby Petrel, Scheicher Rhonbussard and Hutter 17 pre war gliders where out. A Prefect and a few others where flying. The Lancaster also was flying near by, then the B17 flew to the south of the airfield.

I have found that glider clubs are amongst the most welcoming places for enthusiasts to visit and you may be invited for a flight, well worth trying.

If you report to the clubhouse via the proper approach road you will not upset anyone and I am sure you will be made very welcome . If flying is in progress keep a sharp lookout crossing the approach path areas and always give way if in a vehicle.

Dave

I’ve been to some of their previous events at other locations and found the VGC very welcoming. I’ve also visited the gliding site at Gransden and also found the club based there friendly – so I think you’ll be OK!
