suggestions required..
I’ve got a load of vinyl LP’s which I hardly play these days mainly because its easier to put on a CD either on the stereo or my PC..
so I’m looking to ‘digitise’ some/most of them over a period of time – whats the best way to do it..?
I’ve bought some software which will copy music as either normal sound files and burn on to CDs or will save them as MP3’s – this is where I need help as I havent had much to do with MP3’s.. can I save a track as an MP3 and burn it to CD and play it on my normal CD player/PC ?? and what are iPODs all about then – sorry bear with me, I still remember black and white TV and dont own a microwave! 😉

thanks for that.. thinking out loud now, I think i’ll go for uncompressed files burned to CD, it’ll still mean lots of CD’s to store but easier to do so than the equiv. number of LPs…I’ll have to give it a go and see how much i can get on a CD – 2 LPs worth??? at least that should make it easier to find specific tracks rather than having to page through a long list of MP3’s…

Yes you can make regular sound files from your vinyl as long as your PC and sound capture card has appropriate software and inputs. In the case of record turntables and hi-fi amplifiers that’s generally a pair of phono plugs (red and white).
MP-3 is the name of a programme that compresses the data contained in digital audio files down to a tiny size, freeing up hard drive space for further use. I don’t think you strictly need to compress your LP tracks to MP3 level?
AFAIK you can still digitise them as uncompressed audio files and even if they were MP3’s you generally have the option to burn to CD as normal playable audio that your average CD player will handle.
That said, the vast majority of new CD players are MP3 compatible anyway.
You ask about I-pod’s…?
I-pod is just the brand name of Apple’s best selling MP-3 player. It links to your computer and you can store/download as much music on it as it’s little hard drive can store. There are many makes and flavours of MP-3 players, I-Pod just happens to be the market leader because of it’s performance and fashionable styling.
