Hey guys,
I’m planning a trip (Premium Economy) to NY with Virgin in a few months. I get a choice of a Boeing 747-400 or Airbus A340-600 on the return flights. Do you know if it makes a difference in terms of comfort?
Also where in your opinion is best to sit – window, side aisle, centre aisle, upstairs/downstairs, etc?
Probably doesn’t make a diff but thought I might as well ask. 🙂
Cheers!

Personally Id choose the A340 from a rarity point of view, and also the 2-4-2 config, the 747 wins for speed,i gather on a typcial HKG-LHR flight its 45 mins faster than the airbus.
I flew Premium Economy on a Virgin 747-400 and it was 2-4-2 (in the small section on the main deck behind Upper Class) and 2-2 on the upper deck. It’s only 3-4-3 in Economy.

Flown in the smaller A340-200(?) with Cathay once and much preferred their 747’s. Cathays’ A340’s are getting a bit tatty and are much slower to HKG as has been pointed out.
Never flown Virgin but a colleague flew SFO-LHR earlier this year on an A340-600 and loved it, even in economy.

A little after the fact now, but I’d go for the B747. Like the A380, it makes a huge difference to fly in an aircraft with some headroom and room to walk around.
I’ve only flown on an A340 (300) once, and I didn’t find it very pleasant at all.

And it will be a little faster than the bus.

Thanks for the advice, guys. I’m booked on the 747s. 🙂

I have flown in both Virgin types and i prefer the 747 as the seats on the newer ones are slightky bigger but the leg room is about the same but when you get up for a walk in the 747 you can walk unlike the airbus.

A340-600! Not as many opportunities to fly on this lovely looking aircraft. Something a bit different and a much newer aircraft then the 747.

You could say the same for Boeing as of late.
Personally, I’d go for the 747 purely because it is an iconic aircraft.

747.
It’s a Boeing. Nuff said.
Having been involved with Airbus for 31 years, (Manufacture, costs, management, supply chain) I am sick to death of the corners they cut. A great company gone sour with the stench of inexperienced decision makers.

I have flown Premium econonmy on A300-600. Yes it makes a huge difference from normal economy, wider seats, more leg room, drinks (lots of them) when you board and wait for push back etc. Best place to sit was window (for obvious reasons) in front of bulkhead, seats go right back without disturbing anyone behind. I got the night flight out and its the first time that I’ve got a good nights sleep arriving refreshed at the destination. I’ve also travelling upperclass on Virgin, couldn’t get use to the seating configuration on this class whereby you are sitting with your back against the window looking face on to someone in the middle aisle. Apart from the food/meals in upper class, I prefer Premium economy purely beacuse of the conventional seating arrangements. Enjoy, its a good airline and good service.

A340-600 looks cooler!

My views are going to be of no help whatsoever, but it if it were me choosing (bearing in mind that I always stick to economy), I would choose the A340 over the 747 because of the much more comfortable seating configuration. 2-4-2 feels much nicer than 3-4-3.

Anyone want to break the deadlock, maybe with some tempting justifications? 😉

You would have to be mad to turn down a flight on the new Queen of the Skies (the A340-600) ;):p

747 anytime.
