WASHINGTON, June 15 (Reuters) – Virgin America, a new U.S. discount airline backed by British entrepreneur Richard Branson, plans to acquire or lease up to 105 single-aisle Airbus planes, the airline’s chairman, Fred Reid, said on Tuesday.
The company plans to take delivery of some of the first 18 new aircraft from Airbus’ A320 family in early 2005, he told an industry luncheon. The first batch includes 11 A319 planes and seven A320.
Reid said 15 new A320s would be leased from GE Capital Aviation Services and the deal with EADS’ Airbus (EAD.PA: Quote, Profile, Research) (EAD.DE: Quote, Profile, Research) affiliate also contains options to buy up to 72 additional passenger planes, Reid said.

AirTran is a fairly new LCC. Now that they’ve finished replacing all their old DC-9’s with brand spanking new 717’s they’ve placed an order for 737’s.
The greatest thing about the 737 order is that the first aircraft is doing proving/training runs to TPA. Just saw it the other day. It is not to often that anything new and exciting comes to TPA.

I meant the NEW LoCo’s 🙂

and to change the subject a touch but as long as that Muppet is in charge of the US “Mr Bush” I have no time for any American products.
GO BRITISH
Ah yes, and of course, the Airbus’ engines are built by…?
joint ventures involving GE and P&W, of course…

Anybody know what share holding Mr Branson has in this venture?

Don’t forget about Southwest. They’ll soon be one of the largest airlines out there and the entire fleet will be 737’s.

Certianly did to me as well Steve! Even though Sandy said don’t turn this into an A vs B thread, he made a good job of it! Lets get back on topic guys.
I hope Virgin do well in the USA, they seem to have a very good product whatever they try, and lets hope this is no different, but they are competing against established airlines like Southwest and JetBlue as well as the newcomers TED and Song.

And trust me, if a 737-800 failed perform from an airport properly, then the A320 is completely out of the question.
I just think that the “UK” as part of the Airbus partner we should support this and should be happy that we are winning orders from Boeing.
Charters airlines like Boeing aircraft for varioius reasons.
For example, the 757 is popular as it can do what the A320 family cannot; Take off with a full charter load from short, hot and high runways.
The 767 have proven itself as a superb long haul cattle mover.
Quotes from both parties. Seems it had been moving towards A vs B from reading it independently…

ok we all have our different views, so lets just get back to normal.

I don;t think so. No ones mentioned anything that would rate this as A v B.
Its a fact v Ignorance thread.
BTW, I do know the ins and outs. I’m just not to impressed with british manufacturing of today. cheap and shoody workmanship, thats what “made in UK” stands for these days
By: EGNM - 16th June 2004 at 15:39
Every airplane flying in the world uses hundreds of thousends of componants, each using the cheapest materials to produce a part which undercuts the price of the rivals products – it’s the same the world over.
Oh guess what – we have ended up with another A v B debate again…

Chill out mate, just adding my 2 pence worth.
Jeeesss some people?

As for me being in Scotland… that has no relevance.
We are as they say.. in this United Kingdom together
By: Bmused55 - 16th June 2004 at 14:39
….oh and the fact that a British company is supplying parts for Airbus concerns me.
British manufacturing ain’t what it used to be. Cheap materials, cheap production techniques ultimately leading to cheap products sold at extortionate prices.
By: Ren Frew - 16th June 2004 at 14:39
I forgot that Scotland has no connectivity with Airbus so hence you don’t like them?.
That quote slightly contradicts your earlier one about us all being part of Airbus by being British does it not ? 😉
By: Bmused55 - 16th June 2004 at 14:33
The 738 is not designed to have the same performance as a 757, so I’m not at all surprised there.
The 767, well yes some of the British charter fleet 767’s are getting old, but are still highly utilised.
And trust me, if a 737-800 failed perform from an airport properly, then the A320 is completely out of the question.
As for me being in Scotland… that has no relevance. I’m just fed up with people like you acting like Airbus are the be and end all of commercial aviation.

Oh do be quiet.
boeing have not been winning all the orders. Far from it! That drivel you just spouted has no basis in fact what so ever.

Guess you are an avid Boeing fan? I forgot that Scotland has no connectivity with Airbus so hence you don’t like them?.
And as far as the 767, yes it is a good plane but just a tad old these days and hence why I think that any new orders from UK charters would be for the 330 of even the 7E7 later on.
As you supprt th the 757 didnt BY try the 737-800s to serve the airports in greece that couldnt accomadate a 757, think that failed as well “BRING ON THE BUSES”
By: Bmused55 - 16th June 2004 at 14:17
As a British citizen and we are part of the airbus group I think that this is good news instead of boeing winning every order.
But as far as UK charter airlines this is still made up of moslty Boeing aircraft, who do you think will break this with an order that will replace there fleet to a total Airbus design?. My thoughts are on the TUI group as I would think that the whole BY fleet will be replaced with 320/321 and 330 for long haul.

By the way, back on topic, in case you couldn’t tell from that post above, I’m disappointed Virgin USA have gone for the 319/320.
What do you expect, when Airbus and Branson are bed fellows.
