Visit to East Kirkby

Lancaster Lindholme? Are you sure? I recall that large sections of a Wellington were recovered from the bog at lindholme and some were displayed at RAF St Athan museum.

What substantial parts were that?

Are I wrong or do the substantial parts belong to the RAFM, hence you would need to ask them first to restore them? Its astonishing that substantial parts of a Lancaster were scrapped not so long ago at RAF Lindholme.

As the museum posts here on occasion, may I ask would the museum ever consider adding another Second World War bomber type to the collection or even embarking on an audacious restoration of something like the Wellington remains?

The museum to me is a incredible achievement and I’ve always admired the sound business footing it is done on.

I think the “audacious restoration” is already well underway, that of Just Jane being returned to flight. That said, the idea of restoring the Wellington….perhaps to taxying condition…would be incredible and something I’m sure forumites would contribute to.

It’s been discussed on here before and another Wellington is something that sufficient substantial component parts (mostly already under cover) exist for. It would be nice to have one permanently outside the M25. One day if someone has enough money and the necessary people agree it might, just might happen (maybe).

On the subject of uniting wings and fuselages, has any progress been made with the Gladiator wings in Malta? Any hope of uniting them with ‘Faith’?

Are they still rebuilding the ex Swedish Hampden on site? Any progress on that?

Yes it is still there being worked on, Cees. Bit of fencing around it so couldn’t get close-ups unfortunately –

If I’m reading my map right lol the Wellington is in the building to the far left of the control tower in my last pic above – the brighter green one. If not, it’s the one behind that 🙂 It shares a building with the Hampden project which was looking very nice too. Don’t really need to say it but I hope you enjoy your next visit 🙂

I was really surprised at how intact the base still is – it’s a wonderful memorial itself.

The Wellington bits are in one of the smaller buildings, Tony. They come from L7775 which crashed on Bruach Mhor in the Cairngorms 23/10/40.

Blimey, I never saw the Wellington bits when I went.
