Visit to Forsvarets Flysamling Gardermoen Norwegian Armed Forces Aircraft Collection

Recently I noticed that there were direct flights from Edinburgh to Oslo by Norwegian that go to Gardermoen unlike Easyjet whose airport is 2 hours south of Oslo! I managed to view the collection a few days ago and some photos are here. However there were a few “problems” not mentioned in the Oslo guide books that might prove of interest to others contemplating the trip.
1. I intended to visit on Sat 17th May but was unaware that is was Norways National Day and virtually everything was closed including the museum! I would suggest that a telephone call in advance would be a good idea.
2. Its a very long walk around the runway to reach the museum from the terminal and there was no pathway. Taxis are very expensive. There is a shuttle bus, watch out for the correct boarding point as there is construction work going on, and the perviously identified bus stance had been removed. The bus you need goes to the Best Western Hotel and costs 70Kr £7.00 each way. No return fares. Entrance was 90Kr £9.00. Old age discounts start at age 67!

I have been advise that the current situation at Gardermoen is that it is closed due to politics!
Also the information from Bodo is “The civil exhibition is entirely closed for our guests. The new civil exhibit opens in December 2016. We understand that the trip from Scotland is long and costly for you, and would advise you to wait with your visit to Bodø and the museum till 2017.”
So seems pointless to travel to Norway this year. What a pity. Shows how important it is to check things out before making bookings.

Has anyone any up to date information about the museum? Is it currently open or not. The web site suggests it has been closed and an opening in march 2016 was cancelled. I cant geta reply to my emails and hope to make a second vist from Scotland soon.

Be sure to check opening hours before you go there. 17th of May was obviously like the worst timed day ever to head over. You can also take the S33 bus from the terminal, you’re supposed to show the driver a ticket you will get off at the parking area (neighbours to the museum) but I’ve taken that bus three or four times the past months and they never check. Ergo, it’s free.

I was there on Thursday this week for a meeting with the Norwegian Spitfire Foundation. Luckily, we got to see the 88.

I doubt they have any problems with some photos posted.

For us Southerners,
Norwegian operate from Gatwick to Gardermoen and tickets are from under £30 each way arrives middayish and back at 6ish so time enough for this little gem. Check opening days and times as it varies during the year !

Visited there in 2012.
It’s a wonderful museum and worth the effort to get there. I got the shuttle bus to and from the terminal also, which worked well.
Best thing about the day is (I asked if I could) and they let me see the JU88, and was even allowed to take this photo.

I highly recommend Norway to anyone. Found the food expensive, but accommodation can be found cheaply if you look.

Nice shots, thanks Robert. The BOAC Lodestar and He-111 in particular are beautiful!

Looks like a really good museum, I was in Oslo 3 years ago but did not make the museum. My bank account is still trying to recover from my trip to Norway, beautiful country, lovely people, but so expensive. Hope to get back and see this museum.

Lovely shots Robert, thanks for sharing them with us… do you have any objection to my reproducing the Ju52 & He111 shots on the LEMB? I will, of course, fully credit you and this forum as the source… and if you have any additional shots of their Luftwaffe exhibits, that would be good too 🙂

Cheers
Pete

Thanks for sharing – more pics please! It’s a museum high on the list to visit, but I think it’s about the farthest museum in the world from me at the moment…

Thanks for the info. Very important.
Good photos of a collection my friends and I have been wanting to visit.
Excellent Ju52. Most Museums are thrilled to have one. “Real or not real”!
