Hello,
I consider visiting this year´s Flying Legends. But HOW do I get there?
Getting an affordable flight to London-Stansted would be the least problem –
So how do get from Stansted to Duxford? Hitchhiking? Or travelling by railroad? Maybe there is a direct train connection to a nearby station?
BTW: I noticed, TFC´s page still refers to the 2004 airshow …? I was looking for a participation list … found one on flightline uk.

If you can drive you can rent a car at Stansted for the weekend for £58 (provided you can collect it before 11.30pm) and not have to worry about trains or buses.

I tend to agree with Mike J.
I went both days last year and traffic was very acceptable.
Certainly less than the May show.As far as not liking Legends goes–well Mike J, I think will be there three days.
Unlike me who won’t.
Andy
And so say I. The only traffic problem I ever suffer at legends is the que for the turnstiles/pay booths? call them what you will. Mind you I’m wondering if that has anything to do with the fact that I usually get there just after they open.

I’m flying in on the Friday night. Arriving at Stansted at 23:10. There is no train leaving Stansted for Cambridge that time of night, is there like a bus or am I condemned to go to London?
T J
How long does it take to get out the airfield assuming you arrive 23-10.?

If you can get from Stansted Airport [you may need a taxi ,not sure yet,]to Bishops Stortford theres a train 00-27 from Bishops Stortford to Cambridge or 00-55 from Bishops Stortford – Cambridge.
Theres a 23-30 from Stansted Airport to Bishops Stortford [change there for Cambridge.

Hotel at Stansted sounds necessary, early train to Cambridge next morning. I think that’s what I would do, anyway. Anything to avoid London, which in any case is the wrong direction!

Friday is great – arrivals day. Saaturday is good, Sunday is good. hell, why not stay the whole weekend? I will be. I’m sharing a room with another forum member at the Travelodge. (NOT you Janie, sorry to disappoint!) and will be down at the Red Lion each evening no doubt.
Legends? I wouldn’t miss it.

TempestNut, I am trying to make a serious point here; how would you like to be in a foreign country (e.g. Sweden) and due to misspelling find yourself in the middle of nowhere instead of where you meant to be?
Let’s face it, Stansted Airport should be well enough known among the UK aviation fraternity to have its name spelt correctly! (Another place commonly misspelt is Coningsby).
Lesson over, off you go out to play now, and watch out for propellers, they can be dangerous!
By: TempestNut - 30th May 2005 at 20:24
This all refers to STANSTED airport, not STANSTEAD, a small village in Suffolk!
Spelling, please, good folk, especially for our foreign friends!
Slap wrist, Slap wrist, Slap wrist, 😮 😮 😮
Go to the back of the class and do a hundred lines.

Hi
and thanks everyone! I think, I´ll try getting to DX on Saturday morning – don´t know right now if I should book a B&B … I´d rather spend that money having beautiful old planes flying around … hmmm.
By: trumper - 30th May 2005 at 17:05
Right,back to the original question.
Are you flying in on the day,not a good idea. It’s a long day anyway without all that to contend with.
I would arrive a day or so before the display and book a B & B in Cambridge [i doubt you will get much nearer Duxford].

If you are in Cambridge you will have a choice of a free bus journey from Cambridge to Duxford http://www.showbus.com/subind1/bustocamb.htm
http://duxford.iwm.org.uk/upload/pdf/Air_Show_Courtesy_Bus_2005.pdf
There are also trains from Cambridge to WHITTLESFORD which is a 2 mile walk to Duxford [just follow the crowds and traffic jams]
http://www.onerailway.com/
Please note the central train service from Stansted airport to Cambridge does NOT stop at Whittlesford.
Hope this information helps you, have fun.

You’re most recent post on Legends has changed my impression, you absolutely love Legends, as do we all.
Do we?
By: Dead Stick - 30th May 2005 at 14:20
Sorry Dead Stick, would you kindly point out where I said that I didn’t like Legends?
I am simply stating a point of fact.
Fact – the crowds are lower for Legends than the main IWM shows.
Fact – the traffic conditions are better as a direct result of the lower crowds.
You’re most recent post on Legends has changed my impression, you absolutely love Legends, as do we all.
So with such a great show, if you’re travelling to Legends, cater for traffic delays regardless of the other IWM show attendances.
By: Andy in Beds - 30th May 2005 at 12:46
Wow, someone doesn’t like Legends……beware traffic has been busier than the IWM showdays…and as it is THE event of the year don’t get caught out expecting less traffic.
I tend to agree with Mike J.

Not for ‘Legends’ you don’t, the traffic is generally much less than on one of the big IWM show days.

…or by road..
From Stansted Airport0.49 At Bassingbourn Roundabout take the 2nd exit, then merge onto the A120 (signposted London) A120 0.49
1.43 Bear left, then at Priory Wood Roundabout take the 1st exit onto Thremhall Avenue Thremhall Avenue 1.91
0.76 At roundabout take the 5th exit, then join the M11 motorway (signposted Cambridge) Birchanger Green Service Area (WELCOME BREAK) M11 2.67
17.39 Leave the M11 at junction 10, then at roundabout take the 1st exit onto the A505 (signposted Royston) A505 20.06
0.61 Arrive at Duxford Airfield,Cambridge A505 20.66
– Section time 0:29, Total time 0:29
You need to treble that time on a show day on that route from Stanstead, but then again the computer won’t know that. Stanstead Elsenham, Newport, Great Chesterford Duxford by the Scenic Route is 20 to 30 minutes even on the busiest days.

A very, very silly idea indeed.
As Papa Lima says, there are regular Stansted – Cambridge direct trains, only about a 30 minute journey. You can then get a bus directly from the station to the airfield. Why ever would anyone want a to do a 1-hour tube journey into central London, then a train all the way from London to Cambridge?
And it will cost you a lot less going via Stansted too! 🙂
Couldn’t have put it better myself. Stanstead is the ideal place to fly into to visit Duxford. As daily user of this line there are two trains per hour to Cambridge plus special Airport trains that regularly run to Cambridge. To get a train that would stop at Wittlesford you would go to Bishops Stortford first and then change to the Cambridge train, as the airport trains only stop at Audley End and Cambridge.
By: Papa Lima - 29th May 2005 at 21:09
Just the other day I took a train direct from Cambridge to Stansted – you could do the reverse, and then get a local bus from Cambridge to Duxford, I am sure. Or hook up with someone who is travelling from Cambridge in their own car? Trains between Stansted and Cambridge run very frequently. There is also a railway station right next to the Red Lion at Whittlesford, only a pleasant mile or so walk from Duxford!
Personally I would not take the Heathrow option, the tube is hot, crowded and takes forever and then you still have to get up to Cambridge and back down to Duxford. The cost and time apart from the discomfort are, I reckon, excessive!
