I can spell Eyafjallajokull. I was caught up in the April 2010 chaos in Rome and it has since become one of my Common Entrance Geography case studies, so I’m very familiar with it.

For the record, it is pronounced ‘Ee-yer-fee-at-le-yo-kul-tuh’; emphases on the second and sixth syllables. This is courtesy of the BBC Pronunciation Unit (which teaches newsreaders how to pronounce awkward words).

Only Welsh is more difficult to pronounce than Icelandic.

Potential disaster stories like this were mentioned when Eyafjallajökull erupted, must be a low news day as seems very little has changed. At least I can spell Katla which is a bonus too 😀
