as the media frenzy continues regarding commercial (non)flights, does anybody know if or how the historic aircraft are affected ?
seen mention of an early repatriation C-17 flight last week, and police/air ambulance choppers seem to be still working, but anything happening with the historics ? at duxford for example ?

Gooday All
Be interesting to see the affects on global warming with the ash cloud and lack of particles from jet exhausts.
The 9/11 closure of US Airspace did and there have been various scientific studies that reported unexpected results.
I am interested to know if all this ash in the upper atmosphere will cause global cooling because it reflects the sun’s rays.
cheers

Hi HC
Yes i realise that but the ash cloud was nowhere near BD on thur/fri surely ??
The official line at that time was that wouldn’t look good to the public to see any aircraft flying about if they were stuck in airports, most of the public not having the sense to filter out between put puts doing 1000ft circuits to 300 seat jets at 40,000+ft apparently:rolleyes:
I would guess that also as HC says, it just isn’t worth risking any possible damage to aircraft on non essential flights.
Just out of interest, do jet engines that are regularly used in hot and dusty conditions have a shorter life between majors etc?
Obviously piston engines are more protected with most of their moving parts being enclosed, and everything being filtered, unlike turbines that must surely be open to much abrasion in these circumstances

Maybe we should buy some of the aircraft they use to film the volcano from !

I was quite surprised the Tutors were not flying
“Duty of care” issues, just in case. Essential flying? Probably not. Not worth the risk.

Couple of GA types up and about here in the North East of Scotland but nothing else. All offshore chopper flights cancelled as well, even though they normally transit between 1500 and 3000ft. Personally been trying to get from Aberdeen to The Congo since Thursday with no success, and looks like it won’t be today either !

Hope you rinsed it and not wiped it Blue2 or you could have a few scratches.
We had quite a few GA types around Howden yesterday, a few Breighton residents. I saw a couple of bi planes, possibly Jungmiester/s.

Saw a couple of GA types yesterday. Very strange looking up and not seeing a single contrail even… All the cars round here have a layer of grey dust on them, washed mine yesterday to see how much would drop on it by this morning

There was a glider over the centre of Croydon this afternoon and heard something piston engined later in the day but was just coming out of a shop so did not see what.
Feels very very quiet at the moment with nothing flying over us from Heathrow.

Just my POV,
We are grounded at the minute due to the ash but it is our choice however the insurance has made it clear if we were to fly and something happened and it was down to ash then this is an act of god so they wouldnt pay out! – not worth the risk.
Newcastle police helicopter has been out all day today ut not tomorrow they as the met offic says the ash will be overhead Newcastle tomorrow and moving down south.
My car even now has a fine film of dust on it.
we made the right call me thinks

Pagin 01…I imagine you’ll be ground by a pretty large eruption when your missus reads your comment.

Are you sure it was a Puma as i thought i heard a merlin on Thursday but i did not see it though as we get a few of them?, the only other thing is a wokka once in a while.

May well have been a Merlin, I was driving at the time so difficult to make a positive ID. 🙂

Are the GA types unaffected if they stay below 2,000 feet ? It is only ‘controlled airspace’ that is closed, because that is where the ash cloud is transiting at around 20,000 feet

London Gliding Club are busy this afternoon with air tows. A few microlight types out and about too. I also saw an RAF Puma in the Milton Keynes area on Thursday, but flying very low 🙂
Its mighty quiet here with no flights to and from Luton.

Some light aircraft flying around North Hampshire this afternoon and a biz jet out of Farnborough around 2.00pm which seemed to catch everyone’s attention. Ahh! the sound of jets! (…….and I should be in Spain right now!)
