I just found this on Yahoo.fr.
This order is worth 5.5 B$.
VS will order 13 A346 + 13 options.
Devileries will take place from 2006 to 2008.

I don’t know if people are normally let off the plane at stops, but surely going for a real walk into a terminal during a stopover is much better health-wise than doing a 23-hour stretch inside an a/c…

The whole point of ultra long range planes is to try reduce DVT and travel time.
Currently LHR-SYD is 24 hours. A straight run through would cut three hours of this.

I am having a guess now but i suppose the A345 and B772LR were attempts at LHR-SYD sort of routes. Close in range but higher chance of DVT from a direct 24-25hr flight
your only at risk of DVT if your stupid enough to sit rigid for a flight over 6 hours. Simple movements like rotating your foot on its ancle will reduce the risk

The A340-500 is more of a niche aircraft agreed. The 772LR also to a certain extent, though a slightly different niche, with is 2 engines as opposed to 4

Well, I regard 400 odd deliveries a success
By: 4 engines good - 7th August 2004 at 17:58
I agree. The 500 is a niche aircraft that complements the product line but it won’t be needed by that many airlines. A similar fate might well await the 772LR.

i dont think the ‘500 will do so well because not all the airlines will look for that sort of range

With (I think) 100 firm orders plus options since its recent launch I’d say the 600 is doing extremely well.

A fair few airlines operate them though.
Cathay Pacific,
Singapore,
Lufthansa,
Virgin Atlantic,
Emirates,Doesnt Iberia as well  .
Thats not a bad set of customers for a new airplane model. Yes as you said ” They get to shift some more 600’s”
Yes, a few customers indeed.

First off, I not trying to “tarnish” either product. However, my friend has said that the Airbus A340-600 is alot more refined – more perfect shall we say, and thus predictable and boring. Trying to explain this as best I can. Whereas, the earlier A340-300’s were underpowered, a bit more fun and exciting.
But then, for the great majority of passengers (the ones whose opinions count most to the airlines), the more predictable and boring a flight is, the better. 😉
At the end of the day airlines will buy the products that are the more reliable and liked by the passengers- if passengers are to have any preference on the matter- regardless of whether some pilots would rather fly another model instead.
With regard to the aesthetics of the A346, I think it looks superb! The length, the size of the engines, the lot! The A343’s engines have always seem a bit to small on the eye to me- though from my own experience as a pax there was power aplenty when power was needed during an aborted landing.
Anyway, I don’t know how old the news are but according to someone off a.net the undisclosed customer that had 3 more A346 on order has turned out to be IB.
Considering how unhappy all the airlines were said to be about the A346, they can’t stop themselves ordering more of them. The fools! 😀 😉

I didn’t think you were trying to put one down I just didn’t understand the concept! I can sort of see where you are coming from with regards to refined (the A340-600 even has passenger airbags built into the passenger seatbelts in certain parts of the aircraft) however I’ve always liked the spaciousness of the 744 main deck.

Can you explain what you mean by ‘character from a PAX POV’ Matthew?
By: wysiwyg - 7th August 2004 at 14:30
Somebody please define what this ‘character’ is that a Boeing has that an Airbus doesn’t. I smell BS.
The fact is that the airline chose the A340-600 because for what we want to use it for Boeing do not have a product that competes (ie the balance of passengers seats that we want to put on board coupled with volume and remaining payload capacity for freight).
By: Bmused55 - 6th August 2004 at 22:18
yes so do I.
VS already own about 15-20% of the worlds fleet.
By: Hand87_5 - 6th August 2004 at 22:16
Will VS be the biggest 346 operator? I think so…
By: Bmused55 - 6th August 2004 at 22:16
Sandy prefers Boeing , he defend his point of view, I respect that.
Why thank you sir
