What a cool idea,
If anyone wants to wash my car I will charge you £150 for the privilege.
I’ll also charge you £160 to mow my lawn and tidy the borders.

merlin,
I’ve been to Shuttleworth a few times though not yet to volunteer. I help out when I can at another museum, but I do find Shuttleworth to be a fantastic place. That being said, it is like comparing apples and oranges. Some would be more interested in 558 while others would prefer Shuttleworth. My point is that it is not harming anyone for them to put that promotion out there to raise some funds. If people don’t wish to partake then nobody is making them.

The issue with it now, is that it is representative of only its civil flying career. Most of its operational systems – ie, Navigation and bombing, have been removed.
That may not matter much of course!
I thought they always said that these parts would be reinstated in due course – that should take some assistance.
However this would be a major underhaul and does probably conflict with keeping it as taxiable as possible which I suppose distingishes it from the other authentic but dead Vulcans.

Being a newcomer to the 558 story I’ve heard a lot of people compalining about VTTS on this forum since I started paying attention to the whole outfit about a year ago, and I’m curious…….how exactly are they supposed to raise money? It doesn’t pay for itself.
(Rant: People nowadays will find anything to complain about. I thought this was an American trait until I made it to this side of the pond and elsewhere and I’m discovering that it’s just human nature everywhere.)
As someone else pointed out nobody has ever forced anyone to pay for anything related to 558 so if someone wants to spend that money for that experience who are any of us to judge them?
… Alternatively you could volunteer to spend a day every few weeks at Shuttleworth, where you can work in close proximity with flying examples of rare and prototype a/c, WWI and WWII a/c, you can marshall a/c, wing walk, tow the a/c, conduct flightline tours and many more tasks without any cost to yourself, whilst supporting a very long term and established charity. 🙂

Do you know i have never noticed anyone being forced to participate, contribute.I do wonder if the museum/favourite aircraft of some of the detractors on here was to try the same whether these people would knock that.God help that a Spitfire owner or B17 owner ever try to raise money.
558 is my favourite aircraft and I have no problem saying I am VTTS `detractor`.
I idly wonder from time to time, how many in the Vulcan administration are dyed-in-the-wool Vulcan enthusiasts and how many are there simply to ‘milk’ the continuing support ?
They are looking for new / are involved in new projects, so ….

I’m spending a bloody load more than that to fly in a Spit for 20 minutes, there are loads of the population that would regard that as madness I suppose.

a lot of museums are struggling to get volunteers for nothing.
Not for me personally, I have fingered a few Vulcans for nothing. £125 would buy me a few needed parts for my projects.

Yes, it’s an option offered, for those that may enjoy taking it. Good for them.
I can’t help feeling though that ‘558 is now ‘just another Vulcan’, and wondering what the future will bring as it settles into that position- one it shares with many other surviving airframes. I suppose its better condition is its remaining big hurrah really?

Actually, I don’t think it’s a bad idea. It’s got a limited lifespan perhaps, but a hundred quid doesn’t go far these days.

Please scroll through the calendar dates and months to see upcoming tour availability.
Please note that we close bookings for tours, 2 days prior to the date of the visit. When completing the booking form it is very important that the full names of all visitors are entered in the appropriate field as anyone who’s name is not listed will be refused access to the hangar due to strict security restrictions. If you have any problems making your booking, please ring our dedicated booking line on 0845 124 7285. Thank you.
Please be aware that during the flying season (June-September inclusive) tours may need to be rescheduled as operational issues dictate.

What are they flying now, a desk? A broom? Perhaps a wheelie bin?
Hey ho skip to the sky…. Sounds like the makings of a Song, I better copyright it before they nab it .. :p

Jesus, I often wonder what they are going to get up to next to scrape some cash in.
For those unable to afford the unique hands on Vulcan experience there is a cheaper option. For a payment of £50 you get the privilege of dispensing morning and afternoon cups of tea and the ultimate honour of making dinner for the VTTS team.

Oooowwwhhhh !!! Right !! Thanks Robbo, got it now. Well I guess they have to come up with ways of raising cash., because it is good that XH 558 is kept as servicable as possible, but I won’t be volunteering, as been it, seen it, done it, got the Tee Shirt. (On 558 too). Do wish the team best of luck though, she is a national treasure now.

This volunteering malarkey sounds expensive.
