Okay, we know that our beloved XH558 is photographed to the point of exhaustion, but I wonder if anyone has spotted any pictures of other Vulcans from the dim and distant past? I’m trying to find pictures that haven’t been seen all that much and obviously it’s hard work! In particular, I’ve been looking for the old RAF and manufacturer images that used to be floating around decades ago. They were once quite common but these days they are rarely seen which is a great shame. The only surviving pictures seem to be on the internet and they’re inevitably small copies of copies. Wonder where all the magnificent old pictures have gone…
Any thoughts?

Don’t suppose anyone has seen any pictures of Boscombe Down’s B2 which had some rather unusual black calibration markings on its bomb bay doors?

Al – great picture at Luqa – can you date it? I was on the island quite a lot in the late 60s/early 70s and recall Luqa as a busy airfield but never saw the tin triangle there.
It was taken in 1969, but it was taken for the Sea Vixens, the Vulcan taxiing by was coincidental and a very common visitor at Luqa. Excercise Lime Jug I seem to recall

Lovely shot Mk12! I’m sure I would have experienced hand shake witnessing that flypast.
There is a real way ahead look to very early Vulcans, Victors, and DH110 IMO difficult to define really, something like an old fashioned view of the future.
That’s the iconic Vulcan for me…..but I have a feeling I’m in a minority here!;) Probably becausae not many here ever saw the white “in the flesh”.
Not sure about that SH, the anti-flash white was the sole finish carried by the type for six or so years!
The prototypes, VX770 & ‘777, being finished in white was just coincidental being a few years before the bomber white scheme came about.
I must admit I would agree about the white under, camo upper, and black nose being my favourite scheme, although the all camo wrap around (in the correct paint!) comes close!
I guess the all silver must be the rarest with just the early B.1s being used in that scheme.

The kink is part of her beauty!
Mind you, the shot above of VX777 is pretty impressive too. Vulcans really are magnificent!

Doubt they’ll iron that kink out of 558’s leading edges though

More brilliant photos. Yep, that’s XH558 in the paint scheme which I’d happily re-apply if I was rich!:p

Farnborough 1953. A colour slide by my uncle.
Unfortunate slight camera shake.

From a slide that I was given a few years ago. Taken at Goose Bay in about 1972, possibly earlier?…….XH558.

XM605 starting to taxi out at Gander, Newfoundland.
A snapshot from the control tower on 24 August 1972.
Britannia is 489, Atlantic 61+14 and DC-3 CF-RTY.
Over by the tree line is an E.P.A. Carvair.
The hangars there are WWII Royal Air Force.

To be fair, the camouflage scheme was designed for the same role, as you will know – just at a different altitude!
Yes, quite true, but as you say in your first paragraph – age has much to with it and the white just dates me as the white V-bomber force holds such strong memories.

Will do…………:) Unless I missed a post are you a white or camo man?
I like them all SH, that’s why I have 3 models. 1 in white, one camo and one representing 558 in her current interpretation of ‘wrap-around’.
But if I had a Vulcan and had to choose a paintscheme for it, I think camo with black nose, white bib and full colour roundels would probably win out for me 🙂

I guess the colour scheme preference depends on your age and which paint scheme you remember most vividly!
white Vulcans painted in the colours for the role they were originally designed for

The only paint scheme I’ve never disliked is that ghastly finish on poor ol’ XH558. I suppose there’s a vague irony in the only surviving airworthy Vulcan being painted in a scheme which is unique to that aircraft. Rest assured that if I win the Lottery, I’ll be funding a respray!:p

I put a number of them on here a bit ago, when the search function comes back  have a look. A lot of engine testbeds, Farnborough and of course the Vulcan 🙂
Anyway back to all things Vulcan 😮

Lucky old you – just up my street – thanks for sharing them.:) Are they Farnborough, V- bombers or just marvellous 50s miscellenia?
By: Blue_2 - 15th June 2011 at 13:38
-several decades SH!
They were part of a personal album which I was lucky enough to have come my way.

Great picture of Luqa with the FAA in strength…..reminds me very much of lying on the rocks at Kalafrana watching Vulcans on finals to Luqa. Thanks for posting.
