Vulcan preservation

Hi, random question, would anyone know how Vulcans were selected for presevation / museam use by the RAF? Or was it random pull a serial number out of a hat type affair?

Something that I forgot to mention in the original post is that I was also told that there may have been an ITV film crew with him IIRC from the Calendar regional news programme – does anyone remember seeing anything?

I heard that the person who originally purchased Vulcan XM594 at Newark was taken out on to the airfield at Waddington to take his pick!

That said I’m not sure how correct it was or whether it’s just a ‘good story’.
