just for a bit of fun… what in your opinion was the best of the beautiful V-bombers… personally i love all three, but if i had to choose.. it would be the Victor… i know they all had there good points but what was the most capable, and the most popular with there crews.. i would have thought there would have been some rivalry between Vulcan and Victor sqrudrons… 🙂

Decisions, decisions
I can’t decide, they were all fascinating aircraft in their own individual way. I wish we still had something like them in service today doing dual-role tanker/bomber missions with a TIALD pod and a load of 1000lb Paveway LGBs or Storm Shadow cruise missiles on the wings and in the weapon bay 🙂
There are some nice V-bomber pics at http://www.defenceimagedatabase.mod.uk/fotoweb/ (do a search for Valiant, Vulcan or Victor).
Shocking to know this but the Vulcan was fitted with 1000lb LGB’s and underwent succesfull firing trials in 1982, it was also fitted with sidewinders for self defence but this was only a mock up and never anything more.
Regards,
John.

i worked on victors for 3 years (’82-’85) has to be the one for me!

Having worked on Victors I have to pick the Victor. I was always confident that if necessary it would get to the target/launch point. It could take off on three engines fully laden – bit of a struggle.
Mind you having had to jack them three feet in the air to fit Blue Steel on numerous occasions I almost said Vulcan.
Managed to get a flight in XM717 before I left and my recollection is playing Bridge with the rear crew members at umpteen thousand feet.

About the Victor.
A friend of mine (ex-RAF and now lives in Holland) used to work on the Victors. he loved them but also cursed them because a part from one Victor never seemed to fit another without modifications. He told me they were all handbuilt. Perhaps that is why they lasted so long.
Cheers

i never relised the Victor was so popular. you have to admit the V-bombers where amazing bits of kit. British aircraft building at its best…. 🙂
why oh why cant we make aircraft like that enymore…… 🙁
only us Brits could make a large bomber with fighter type agility, it always seemed to me that the Vulcan enjoyed being thrown about the sky… saying that i have heard the Victor was no slouch either..
the Victor looks very aggresive.. even in there later [tanking] years, they looked like they could kick butt… 😉

Good question and a tough one to call!
This had made me think long and hard about which of the 3 I’d choose, and JDK, good skill on the wildcard of the Sperrin! Am I right in thinking none exist and haven’t done for a good few years? Anyhoo after much deliberation I have reached the colclusion of the Vulcan, tough one though!!
Heard a good story from our Rects Controller a few weeks ago, he is an ex Victor man and he was telling us about how the French used to get upset when we wanted to transit our fighters over their air space, the sloution was a couple of Victors in close formation, which created a big enough radar return to smuggle a couple of fighters each directly underneath them, ATC were none the wiser! Nice one lads!
A couple of pictures I took follow.

Definately the Victor for me.
The Valliant always looked a bit out of date and the Vulcan was too gracefull, whereas the Victor really looked some wierd, mean machine, a bit doglike in a way, like a Staffordshire Bull Terrier. I’m gratefull to have been at the end of the runway during the final disbandment ceremony when 3 of the beasts did the take off and flypast at Marham, stunning sight.

Both Vulcan and Victor for me, the Victor just looks like something that someone drew with a pencil on a drawing board, (which they did) such lovely lines.
The Vulcan has such a great sound, not as good as a Lightning at low level mind you 😀

Victor had the mean/stealthy look about her while the vulcan had the awesome power to weight ratio!

Short Sperrin?

Opps. 😀

Blimey !!! how would you choose ??
I always had a soft spot for the Victor but the Vulcan was a real head turner at displays and i suspect was more pleasant to fly.
But on an operational note which one do you reckon had the biggest
Radar Return ???

Victor every time, happy memories from the 70s while working on them.
As an airshow act, Vulcan.

For scare tactics I would vote for the Victor, to me it would scare the $h!t out of the enemy just looking at it, but for the absolute raw power screaming avon scramble take off it has to be the Vulcan.
I think I will have to go to a dark room now and sort it out!!!!! 😉 .

John.
