I came across a photo and write up of a Vulcan XJ823 in a vulcan survivors book that i have here. I wonder what her current status is as she looks well cared for and has been repainted. I wondered if her apu was run or anything or is she like most vulcans and remains a sad dormant DEAD aircraft?

So she is nowhere near electrically live then?

Darn, next you’ll be telling me Santa Claus is not real either….
LEDs and a torch maybe but still a cracking photo…

The pictures of 823 as live is a little bit deceiving. the nav lights are led’s in there and the cockpit was a torch. I was there with martin when he took that amazing picture.
they will light up the aircraft there and you can get some amazing shots.
alas the last one only had myself and 3 other people. if you are interested, give the museum a call and if there is enough interest then they might so another one but they need about 15 people for it.
hope that helps

Back in the days of Gannet AEW.3 XL502 being airworthy and operated from Carlisle during the late eighties, one of her ground crew members (Tom Stodart i think) also owned the Vulcan there. At the time she was kept running and was still in very good condition, but as to her current condition i have no idea i’m afraid. Sorry.

XJ823 Is safe at Carlisle Airport, the Solway Aviation Society is continuing it’s development with the new owners of the airport Stobart Air.
The Museum staff are preparing the awkward task of painting the underside of the Vulcan, everyone likes standing on the wings to paint the top !!! as you get a great view of the main runway.
823 Will never fly again not due to airframe problems but simply funding, we are one of the few museums that allow visitors into the cockpit, lets face it you don’t just want to look at a Vulcan you want to get in and smell the leather etc, it’s a unique expriance.
You can see XJ823 at www.solway-aviation-museum.co.uk
Looking after a Vulcan is a monumental task especially with little or no budget (the voice of bitter experience). Well done on all the work so far…
By the way, PM on is way.

Apologies for the Zombie thread but…
I thought this would be better than creating yet another thread on 823. Just wondering how Tom Stoddart and crew made out with her? We last heard they were going to power up the aapp and get her moving to a new loaction near the museum.
Any updates??

Carlisle Weather
Does anyone know how dear old ‘823 fared with the recent awfully wet weather 😮 up her way?
By: XL391 - 5th January 2005 at 02:58
This is how she currently is (well, Spring 2004), next to an ex Saudi Lightning. Her overall condition is good but her jet pipe caps are, indeed, destroyed. Her fin could also do with a bit of remedial work.

This is how whe looks nowadays a bit on the dirty side but knowing the museum she will be back in tip top conditions soon (sorry about the car!)
