Vulcan XL391 at Blackpool

… is up on Ebay. Six grand as a starting bid, for a dangerously corroded airframe.

The narrative rather laughingly states:

“AS IS, where IS! Buyer collects!!! Sold subject to removal within two months.”

I’m not in the slightest bit surprised to see that none of the photos are up close and detailed…

One of the guys I know at the airport is going to phone me as soon as anything (low loaders or JCB,s) turn up. I’ll post as soon as he phones me.

That’ll be helpful – thanks. Hopefully it won’t come to JCB’s (for now at least).

682AL- is this potentially the most exciting thing to ever happen in Dukinfield?

Well in terms of the Flypast Historic Aviation Forum, I guess it is. Unless you want the “Merlin engines disposed of down a redundant pit shaft when the scrapyard was cleared in 1969” story. But that belongs on another thread.

Seriously, it’s yet another odd twist in the tale, don’t you think? Hoax objections to his planning app. Hmmm, wonder who’s behind it all?

Just a small update, from th’Advertiser, Tameside’s free weekly paper.

It seems that two objections submitted to the Planning Department have been proven to be false.

One was in the name of a neighbour who died some years ago, and the other was in the name of a friend of t’landlord!

Decision still pending as of tonight, though….

H’mm interesting, is there someone on the forum that lives close by and can keep us posted on XL391? If the scrappys turn up one morning then I’d shoot up there for some photos and maybe a souvenir when the inevitable happens.

Looks to be in not a bad state the nose front oleo is still ok as its not sunk down . The cosford one is in a worst state as the nose as dropped . This one looks ok from a stand back view theres no sign of sagging at the front end .
.

That’s only ’cause the back end has sunk so far into the ground! The nose oleo is fully compressed, but so are the mains, and the main legs have sunk significantly. The fescalised portion of the main legs is badly corroded. With all the corrosion on the exterior of the airframe, I’d hate to see the interior…

Before the aircraft was completely cordoned off, i walked under it, and you practically had to duck to get under the remains of the jetpipes.

Some tree huggers painted a ban the bomb sign on her wing. They also wrote on one of the starboard jet pipes what an evil killing machine she is….tossers….

hmm
Distance shots always look good and I bet she even looks great in wet weather! Somebody posted closer pics with more detail several months ago and it showed major corrosion on the nose gear leg and axle as well as a crack in the casting?
I do hope that the entire aircraft can be saved but I think she might end up being a nose section at the end of the day…?

Just to let all know, took the trip up to Blackpool today to get some sunny shots of it in that location. According to an airport official who stopped by to see who I was, what I was doing; the new owner has been given another 3 weeks to get it moved.

With this being my first visit to XL391 since it arrived here and after all the talk of its condition I was actually surprised by how good it looked. Sure there’s lots of corrosion and it’s pretty weathered but generally with a bit of TLC and a repaint I’m sure it would have stood there another 20 years.

Lets hope that the whole airframe does get saved. Hope you all like the pics.

Apparently the new owner was told that planning permission would take eight weeks maximum from the date of application in mid-November – obviously they work fast in Manchester!

The application was only submitted on December 2nd, according to the Tameside M.B.C. website, so the outcome may not be notified for some time, especially as t’council will have enjoyed the usual Christmas shutdown.

Things are indeed looking grim…but weren’t they always for this ill-fated adventure?
