Hi everybody, I have just spent a few weeks working at BAES Woodford and every day on the drive to our hangar I noticed a vulcan sitting there looking rather sad, her white paint is going a bit green. Was wondering if anybody knew what if anything is happening to keep her preserved.

I spent last weekend with the Elvington guys, at the Yorkshire airshow, and they are not interested in 603. A great shame.

there is another thread on here about the same aircraft apparently there are talks going with BAE about her future rumours are rife at the minute elvington may know more (another possible destination)

I hope the local council will name a road after the mighty V. Prehaps in the affordable housing area of the new estate.

What is the success rate in the civil world of moving Vulcans ? I suggest that a static Vulcan bomber comes distinctly down the line with BAe Systems compared with ‘X’
millions that can be acquired in turning Woodford into homes for footballers wives!

More H&S Bullsh*t, yet again, beaurocrats talking utter nonsense and those guys who have looked after her to make her one of the best static Vulcans anywhere in the country (ignore the shabby paint, she really is in fantastic condition) not given a thought. I am absolutely disgusted. There will be no efforts to move her, no matter what anyone at BAe says. Angry email on the way…

I’ve been told there allegedly was an airfield audit and the Vulcan is a ‘hazard’. Not been worked on for a while and it will be scrapped so i’ve been told. 🙁

Wow another vulcan bulldozed??
By: TobyV - 13th August 2006 at 17:48
A source of mine suggested WFD was to be closed within 4 years but that was before all those new Nimrods were announced. That would certainly tally with the Vulcan being scrapped since it cant fly out and moving anything by road is difficult and expensive (trust me, I know about that  ). I hope this isnt the case, not just yet at least.
If WFD did close, that would leave presumably only Warton, Brough and whatever is at Prestwick? I assume that Filton and Hawarden are owned by Airbus UK now rather than BAE Systems?

I’ve just heard what I hope are rumours suggesting that she is to be broken up within a matter of weeks/months. Can anyone shed any light on this please? 🙁

Yeah youre right she hasnt moved, just me getting confused. I think woodford may have 9 or 10 years left still, but I guess we will see in october when they announce the nimrod contract.

I think the meeting last year was to discuss moving 603 to manchester aero park.
Woodford’s days are numbered I suspect. Prime housing land at Woodford one can see.
I would suggest – that the first public flight of XH558 should be at Woodford, for historical reasons before the site closes.
My opinion –

nope she hasnt moved in 3 years trust me on that
By: MR 2 - 2nd August 2005 at 23:23
She has been moved since that photo was taken as the mra4s were sitting near there, so thats a good sign at least, it would be good if she could be restored to a decent condition and maybe moved to a more public place of display. Thank you for the info guys.

might be visiting woodford to arrange a birdstrike…. would like to talk to the heritge guys regarding any info left on the avro 730 (constructon drawings etc ((or did it all dissapear up in smoke in a fire at chad in the late 50s??)))
anyway – back on topic – recent photo of ‘603 on airliners…

bit dirty but probably not too bad.
looks like the nose oleo may have compresed – a common problem.

Guys,
The avro heritage centre look after it still. I spoke with one of the guys last week and he said they can dry run it, but health and safety has put a stop to them doing ‘full on’ runs. They are restricted with the use of staging /scaffolding as well!!
I never got any information about the meeting, but i think it involved ideas to move 603 from woodford. I may be wrong.
The avro heritage centre is open every tuesday afternoon (IIRC) when the guys open the centre and do tours of the vulcan and other rarities. Security clearance is required, so if you want to go give plenty of notice.
J man 🙂

About this time last year there was an “urgent meeting” at Woodford regarding XM603, anyone have any info on what was being talked about ?
By: Peter - 2nd August 2005 at 14:51
She used to worked on quite regularly and had her engines run up on occasion. Something about a broken nose wheel part put an end to her taxi days but people more in the know will be able to add more…
