Vulcan XM603 to be scrapped?

Thought this deserves it’s own thread. There is a pretty strong rumour that ‘603 is to be scrapped at Woodford as a result of an airfield audit. Is this aircraft more worthy of preservation than the Blackpool example of which a huge frenzy was produced? Here is an example in better condition that was ,until fairly recently, engine run.

If anyone could confirm/deny the rumour that would be great.

Cheers,

I was thinking more of airframe spares resulting from the parting out of the aircraft pre-scrapping.

I think it might be something to do with the fact that as XM603 is not kept in running condtion anymore spares and support equipment are not needed anymore at Woodford.

Anyone know the latest?

I see on pprune that a person who attended the Cosford forum with Dr Pleming makes reference to Woodford having more spares available now. Is this tied in with the alleged scrapping?

Landraver, I would never want to dampen anyones enthusiasm mate.

603 is still in one piece as of Monday when I drove past.

I find it odd that there’s the active Bae North West Heritage Group at Warton yet the same kind of activity is being frowned upon at Woodford. 🙁

at least BAE are talking about XM603, has anyone spoke to elvington? ( i do not know if elvington is one of those interested parties) no point in cutting her up – nose sections dont fly, i guess there are people who think small stactic displays in museums are better than flying exibits that the whole country can benefit from, hope this wont be the case. not everyone can travel to manchester and who would want to for a nose section kids end up climbing about in?

You’re surely not suggesting that ‘603 could fly?? Does everyone live nearer Elvington than Manchester? I never mentioned kids clambering over exhibits, I was suggesting preserving items rather than scrap the whole airframe. Who last moved a dis-assembled Vulcan over distance and re-assembled it?

Let’s stay realistic here….

Manchester Museum of Science and Industry:prime venue?

They have an Avro 707 so why not ‘complete’ the story with the nose or more of ‘603? Seems an ideal place for me. Well, it’s birthplace would be ideal but nevermind.

I spoke to a senior BAE Systems rep at Duxford today about XM603. He said they are looking into dismantling it for removal from Woodford and are going to talk to several “interested parties”. It is not intended to scrap it at this stage, although there are, of course, no guarantees.

Yawn.

Lots more “chatter” about another doomed tin triangle.

Remember those funny snail eating types on the other side of the Channel? What do they do when someone crosses em?? Get on an internet forum? No, they take physical ACTION.

What about a large organised PROTEST to increase public awareness? Yes I do mean to leave the keyboard alone and take a trip to Manchester and DO SOMETHING……….

Anyway, if you have any experience of the ENORMOUS task that carefully splitting any aircraft for transportation involves (and the Vulcan wouldn’t be on a list of “easy” projects), you’d stop even contemplating it now.

Left to chatter, IT WILL BE CUT UP, with ACTION it may be saved.

You make your bed…….

As far as I am aware only the Vulcan at Hendon has been taken apart, moved and re-assembled.

Moving XM603 to any new location would be a mammoth and expensive task. The costs involved would be unlikely to be re-couped through increased revenue at the new location.

Sorry to be negative but I think a move is unlikely.

On the idea to section her and move to Elvington, I’ll go for that and be quite prepared to volunteer to provide my labour along with a friend (we both having some aircraft experience).

Top set of photos, its when you look at these you fully understand that our heritage is slipping away.
E-mails to BAe- would be total waste of time anyone of like minded nature has either retired of moved on, sorry but pound and pence rule now.
Most at the top would think that a Vulcan was something off Star Trek, (no really).
