Vulcan XM612 at Norwich

Hi uys.
Just browsing the PPrune forum and came across this thread on “612”
http://www.pprune.org/forums/showthread.php?threadid=132829
She sure is looking a bit tired on the outside and in need of a repaint. I wonder with that palouste sitting there if her APU or anything else is run up or operated?

Thanks for the info CNAM100! Any chance of some piccies the next time her lights are running etc? Dammit I wish I lived in the UK I would be down there with the scrubs on and paint roller ready!

How about us forum members “adopting XM212 for a repaint? Those that can get down to help do so and those that could sponsor a couple of quid each also do so???

Sounds like we ought to meet up at the end of the Airshow season and have a Forum paint by numbers day. 😀

From the City of Norwich Aviation Museum

Interested to read about our Vulcan XM612. Some of the information posted needs to be corrected.

The APU is no longer run on safety grounds. We last ran it about eight years ago. Although it is still probably OK, the arrival of a ground power unit mean that there is no need for us to use it now. Obviously insurance complications may have had an effect on this too. We have bomb bay doors, airbrakes and various lights functional. GPU is used on an occasional basis and only when we have members who are familar with operation on site.

Subject to volunteer availabilty, escorted admission to the cockpit is available at the bargain price of £1.00. Best day for this is on a Sunday.

XM612 is worked on at some stage every week of the year. Main work underway at present is repainting port underside, not shown on photos. We welcome contact from anyone interested in helping out. Contact for the Vulcan is Steve Taylor, telephone him at the Museum on 01603 893080 to volunteer. Ask for ‘Brummie’ version of Steve Taylor as we have two members with this name and this is best way to tell them apart!

Hope that this might inspire someone to get involved in maintaining this aircraft. We have all the equipment and material available for a full repaint, extra help will mean it happens quicker.

“Didn’t have the Paloust back then either”

Do you have any idea why they have got the Paloust then ?

I’ll post up some close-ups of XM612 at some point this weekend. Took them about a fortnight ago. She looks very scruffy.

I used to be a member of the City of Norwich Aviation Museum, and 612 was run up every couple of weeks; most of the systems were operational. She was a constant headache to keep looking good though – and that was 10 years ago. Even then corrosion was setting in to the panel joins etc. Spent many a happy hour on a sunday morning in the cockpit talking rubbish!

Didn’t have the Paloust back then either.

For a small donation, you can get inside 612 and last summer I did.
It’s complete inside and in good condition.
Lovely collection and location. Lots of grass for the kids to run around and right next to Norwich airport.

Andrewman,
good to hear that she is kept somewhat “live” sure makes looking after the aircraft much easier

Hi Peter

The APU on XM612 is still live and they run it occasionally. In fact their are plenty of working electrical systems on XM612 and the engines were looked at a couple of years back and are still good enough to run again.

The thing is the airframe itself needs some work and a repaint would be a good idea but as always money would need to be found for this.
