Vulcan XM652

Sorting through some Old photos and came across these taken from the train when passing through Sheffield in 1984

A quick google discovered this interesting link : http://www.iconicaircraft.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=5659

So I presume this is the scrapyard in Sheffield.

I asked the question as although it has the look of a scrapyard but there also appears to be buildings being demolished etc, so I wasn’t sure if it had been in storage somewhere and the site was being demolished around it.

Crikey the photos posted by Thunderbird167 bring back from hazy memories (I remember the Vulcan nose in the yard but was only five at the time, so not too clearly). Here are some photos taken about a year earlier during what was a valiant attempt to dismantle XM652 and ship it by road, sadly not to be: http://www.flickr.com/photos/22822942@N05/sets/72157631725006479/with/6360648523/

I’m the chap in the dodgy red trousers and anorak! I still remember being driven with my parents in an olive drab RAF Landrover to where 652 was parked on a lazy runway over towards the A15. It was a dark, misty day and the parked bombers seem to appear suddenly out of the mist as we drove past them. Quite surreal! I guess there weren’t too many left by that point but 50 Squadron was still there.

As far as I know the cockpit was reasonably intact and in good order. I have no idea what state it’s in now. XM652 was dismantled relatively carefully at RAF Waddington before being removed by road to Sheffield. I have a feeling the parts may have been stored for up to a year before they were finally scrapped, although I could be mistaken there. The cockpit is now in Wales. I believe the yard pictured in the photographs was on Brightside Lane in Sheffield (I always thought it was Carlisle Street, but can’t be since the pics were taken from a train). There’s been a lot of redevelopment around there over the years (near Meadowhell) so not sure if this particular land has now been built on. I’ll post it’s location if I can find it.
