Vulcan's winter home

I was looking through a spotter’s forum earlier today and I saw some comments about XH558’s winter “home” at Lyneham. There’s some suggestion that TVOC are shelling-out £10,000 per month to have her hangared there.

Just wondered if anyone knows if this is true or if the charges are for other matters (although I’d be fascinated to know what!). Surely, our beloved MoD can’t be so petty as to charge for hangar space to accommodate one of their most iconic aircraft – can they?

True they don’t, but they make better reading than previous years.

While im not overwhelmed with this latest appeal it was always going to be the case that we had to have one and at least this time the figures being needed from the public are less which when you consider the increased costs is not bad going.

Very few charities I would think pay the lions share to themselves and not to the very thing they are supporting!! Can we query it with the charity commissioners etc??

If you believe that then you are very naive!
The percentage of income that actually goes to good causes is actually below 25% in many charities that are a household name.

can’t give you the figures im afraid

Nor should you have to – that’s TVOC’s responsibility. Be nice to know what they’re doing with other people’s money…

Are you on about my post about XH558 staying at Brize rent free??

The fact that I quoted David Burke in my post, directed my answer entirely in that direction and made no reference to yourself or 558’s stay at Brize should have been a fairly decent indicator, but to set your mind at ease….

…no, I wasn’t ‘on about your post’.

Not wanting to appear to be fighting TVOC’s corner here, but the RAF manpower was certainly not detached to TVOC for free, the RAF were remunerated. TVOC certainly had a good deal, as it was on a fixed price basis, but don’t be fooled into thinking that it was a ‘free gift’ from the Air Force!!

As goes the wage bill, the Engineers are certainly not on an extravagant wage. Think more mid-upper 20k. Office and hangar support staff, less still. As goes Management, draw your own conclusions….. however, I’m sure that you could find much better value for your money.
