If that’s how you see the British workforce then I’m clearly casting Pearls before Swine.

in the main yes i do !! but then so does the rest of the world !! any single individual who had owned a modern rover product would agree

i worked for a dealership once they were cheap cr*p sold at top buck as if it was a good quality old rover

a friend owned a freelander that was at the main agents more than on her own drive , not being the brightest against her husbands wishes it was replaced by a modern (ish) MG saloon it was towed off the other day for yet another expensive repair and has not returned as yet

that was the good quality british product and why most production has gone west from the uk

we were shipping out cheap quality sh*te at a premium price in that respect i have more respect for the chinese product you know what you are getting for the price , it may or may not be good !!

but do you A buy a chinese product for 700 quid that may or may not be good , or B buy a british product for 1500 quid that may or may not be good ???

Certainly amongst the same model Fords and Hondas I’ve owned, the cars built in Germany have been far superior in build quality to their UK-built counterparts – much fewer rattles, breakdowns and leaks, even the steel seems thicker, with better protected and finished paint jobs…

Quite agree i ran a Cologne built Capri for twelve years never a problem ,other than rear springs as they tend to be tail heavy

Oh yes, all of it original, all of it originally fitted to something, some parts of it, like the rear axle for instance, came from an even earlier 1971 Mach1, now that’s longevity for you. http://www.mocgb.net/forums/images/smilies/yahoo/113.gif

Well Hybrid longevity then eh

But, the people on $2.50 an hour (Now up to about $7.00 in 3 years) areno more than illiterate fools from fields. Two weeks training and they are putting aircraft parts together. They turn up at 7:30 and go home at shift end, not having used a single piece of initiative. Hopefully, the foreman or manager may have spent time at Uni or over in the West learning the correct way.

There are many discussion points.
Yes, early Jappos were indeed terrifyingly crap.
Yes, I’m sure the Chinese will catch up with correct quality requirements, but they are Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay off yet. Trouble is, they are making parts and indeed whole aeroplanes that Westerners could fly on….whilst they learn.

Money has no flag.
Businesses are (Were) running to China because the workers were on $2.50 an hour. You could get an hourly rate of about $27 per hour out of them (Chinese Government runs the export businesses like the mafia and insist on the firms putting minimum 60% profit on. Still cheaper than Eastern Europe and Mexico….on paper.
But, the people on $2.50 an hour (Now up to about $7.00 in 3 years) areno more than illiterate fools from fields. Two weeks training and they are putting aircraft parts together. Well, the dream is finally ending, businesses with brains are moving out of China to Indonesia or other places, especially India. China has become too expensive, (19% escalation), the people are not the easiest to deal with at any level. The opposite of the Indian and Indonesians, they are supremely more intelligent and will offer savings ideas….put effort into the task, not just do it like an automoton.

I hope Nikon are supplying all the bits and China are doing the assembly. If China is selecting the supply chain then Nikon will be soon losing it’s reputation.

Biker? No, I had a Suzi 250 in 1974. That was it.
British bikes were killed off by the advent of affordable small cars (The British Mini!) and not an influx of Jappo bikes. But in later years, the latter didn’t help.

There is also the political view. Is it our duty to assist the developing nations?
Well, to an extent yes….but it is a far better solution to have some protectionism and keep the UK industrial base going. Oh, yeah, too late.
The Americans can do it, just about. But Americans are very proud of buying American goods. Rather than ban imports (Which goes against the GATT agreements and others), the people don’t want it…so there is no pull. Brilliant protectionism, no demand!!!!
If you and I refused to buy cheap imports, all would be well……but we cannot do this. We are all generally skint, because the wealth of the nation has gone and we’ve had bad pay for years now…because the industrial command has gone….and the circle is complete.
However, like Poland, the far east will become too expensive to send work to. The UK and Europe may become the next new market!

The other problem, is that the demand for goods and potential sales in China is breathtakingly massive. So, companies need a hold in Chian in order to be part of that market.
The Biz jet, General aviation and Helicopter market is presently NIL. All airspace is controlled by the military and no private flying. Well, as the people get wealthier, they will demand that to change. There will be a massive uprising which will make the Arab ones look like a schoolboy fisticuff.
Bring it on.

China? They will build cheap cars made to a very high level of accuracy. Out of the WRONG materials. Just like everything else they make.

i’m of an age to remember the exact same being said about the first datsuns to arrive here !!

i worked at an aerospace heat treatment plant that had a chinese student learning correct methods of heat treatment to aerospace standards !!

believe me when i say the quality will be there in a quicker time scale than you think

the phrase shows just how backwards the british are they have the attitude no one can build things as good as they can for less ( strange how rover were still using honda engines till the last breath ( except making them worse than the honda equivelant ) and how it was less than ten years before that datsuns were called cheap jap crap made out of the wrong materials )

the british are bloody fools that stick to the same belief of the cinese now that they had of the japanese in the 70’s we have learned absoluteley rock all from past beliefs and mistakes !!

you too are a biker i believe ??? if the chinese product is so atrocious how come suzuki has jumped on board ??? and how come the last nikon camera i purchased was made in china ??

Japanese cars. Can’t argue with the reliability stats. Personally, I’m a person that believes we only dropped 10% of the bombs on them that we should have done in WW2. So, I don’t buy Jap if I can help it (Which is hard).

Tornado 64, I think there are something like 1.3 Billion Chinese. Loads make items in their own homes for sale all over the world. They get paid peanuts, we pay top whack:rolleyes:

It’s a job to find anything thats made in Britain, in the high streets these days, but I must admit, I try and buy British made items if I can.

It was on the BBC News some time ago, thieves are targetting high end range cars to steal, which are sent to China, where they are melted down for their metal contents, so your stolen top of the range Merc could end up as the knife and fork you eat your Sunday dinner with, they have an insatiable appetite for steel at the moment.
Whats the answer?.

Good job he don’t have to pull a rickshaw:D
Now theres an idea, instead of having a car, get a rickshaw, and one of our many illegal immigrants to take you to work and the wife shopping:eek:Pay minimum wage.

Just think, no more exhorbitant cars, servicing of same, no depreciation, no carbon footprints, no oil needed.no Insurance Tax, M.O.T.Petrol. Well, perhaps an Annual check up for the driver.
Hey, I have just sorted out a great chunk of our economy and unemployment, could even give rickshaw passes for us OAPs, well, you got to have a laugh havn’t you?.:diablo:

I love Japanese cars, regardless of manufacturer and the same with their bikes. The rest of the world ignored the threat and many makes perished because of this.

i presently think the same will be said about china in the future !!

i’m presently considdering buying a chinese motorcycle coppy for cheap work transpot

i already have an honda that i am customising but for 700 quid you can buy a brand new machine now the cosmettic finnish is usualy poor quality but there are lots that say ,for the price they cannot be beaten and seeing as most 125s get used for one year then you usualy move on to a bigger bike you usualy loose about 3-4 hundred quid depreciation you would buy a new japanese machine for about 3-4 thousand and loose a lot more in depreciation

warning !! the cars are on thier way the new M.G. is a chinese car and if we have to be realistic it can only improve on rovers dreadful quality when they had the company !!

I have been fortunate enough over my lifetime to have owned some pretty exotic and expensive cars. I have also had the misfortune to have had some crap.(mainly French)
I now own two cars that I can’t fault for reliability. Both are old Ladies now but they don’t look it or act it!:D
First one, 1992 Honda Prelude 2.2JDM Vtec BB1 Auto with all the toys.Bought 2003.
Second one. 1992 Toyota Lexus Soarer 4.0ltr V8 Auto bought2011 with the amazing engine that was developed for the Lexus LS400. Honestly you cannot hear it running even when giving it a bit of “welle”
This replaced my Subaru Impreza which I had for 10 years and the only reason for sale was due to my health problems I could not drive a manual car with rock hard suspension any more.

I love Japanese cars, regardless of manufacturer and the same with their bikes. The rest of the world ignored the threat and many makes perished because of this.

if you want to go into the bush buy a land rover , if you want to come out again buy a land cruiser !!

I spent two weeks being driven round South Indian minor roads and jungle/forest in a Mahindra 4×4/people mover thing. Coped with everything, no problem, even the flooding ( I did warn them I’d bring rain with me). Only thing that didn’t work was the USB port but that was Japanese. Their Ambassador cars are a copy of an engish car from the fifties, still being made and they last forever or until an elephant sits on them.
