Hi
My father is thinking about doing a short series of the Waco CG 4 (Hadrian) in British marking. He has started with one Waco CG-13As since two of this were used at the Airborne Forces Experimental Establishment for trials in 1945.
Unfortunately there is very very few information about these two gliders so any addition reference or photo will be really appreciate.
Since there is no kit for this model he has started modifiying one CG-4
Here are some photos

Many thanks in advance
Cheers

Wow! That turned out great and a really quick build too.
Can I see a close up of the nose art? Curious to see how it came out once it was scaled down. 🙂

That would be great. Specially the nose art !!!
We are preparing the next set of decal for our friend so we could include it.

Do you want me to make up some images of the nose art + serial for you to get decals printed?

Hi
Here are some photos showing the progress on the model. Now with such a great set of photos is much more easy!!!!. We couldn’t wish for anything more!

I think this might be KL162.

The picture of the CG-13 survivor in Flypast was actually sent in by myself and the photograph was taken by my father approx 1976. Its location was a caravan site near Gristhorpe rather than Filey (but not that far away) and it had been converted to a caravan. My father remembered it being there (along with another one) when he was a boy living in the area in the early 1950s and when we went back in approx 1976 on a visit it was still there, the forward fuselage was remarkably complete. On a subsequent visit some years later it was gone I assume broken up. Next time I visit my father I will try and find the pictures he took and post them.

Nope, just that it appeared in the ‘Problem Pictures’ section. It may be one I have set aside, I’ll have a dig tomorrow and if I find it email it or pass it on Facebook

Hi DaveF
It would be great if you could find the photo of the Indian ones. Do you remember in which year could have been taken the photo?
Kind regards
Santiago

Jeepman -I recall the picture -it would have been about 1985 and it was on the last page of the issue. It was pictured sat on its undercarriage -very sad it didn’t survive!

Somewhere I have a pic in an old Aviation News which might be one of the Indian ones – will have look!

I seem to recall a picture of a (the) UK survivor in an early edition of FlyPast Shame it didn’t survive into preservation.

The nose art and position of the serial is interesting.
If you look very carefully at the serial number you can still see traces of the original USAAF serial underneath it. I can just make out the 2 at the start and 76 at the end. I assume it was scrubbed off and just painted over hence it’s position. Doesn’t look like standard RAF form either. Wonder if they decided to copy the US style of the USAAF added it for them.

Alastair,
Cracking stuff. I think the tiny picture I had was one from that set but it was so small and with the screen printing process it was hard to make out the details.
Funny, I was planning a trip to the National Archives in May. You’ve saved me a bit of time 🙂
Just for reference on the serials/allocation:
Originally built by Ford with designation CG-13.
* 42-43875 transferred to the RAF as KL162 for evaluation by AFEE. Relegated to ground instructional airframe 5836M March 1946. Scrapped at some point there after.
* 42-43876 to RAF as KL163 for evaluation. Struck off charge Sept. 25, 1946.
The following transferred to RAF Mauripur, Karachi, India and struck off charge Feb 28, 1946.
* 42-43877 to RAF as KL164
* 42-43879 to RAF as KL165.
* 42-43880 to RAF as KL166.
* 42-43881 to RAF as KL167.
I believe Alec Waldron was one member of the GPR who got the chance to fly one of the CG-13’s at AFEE.

Hi guys
Many thanks to all of you for the responses.
Yeah the paint scheme on the model you’ve got is a bit wrong
Yes, you are absolutely right. :):):)
Alastair, what can I say. The photos are absolutely great!!!. As I mentioned in my email, many thanks for the photos. The level of details will allow us to make the model much more accurately.
Kind regards
Santiago

Oops sorry, dyslexic fingers. 😮
The report number should be G45 (no idea why I typed G24). I wouldn’t want anyone asking the National Archive for the wrong report (By the way G24 is a note on the direct wire communication between tug and glider).

Santiago / OneEighthbit
Here are two blow ups from the AFEE report G24 on the CG13 it shows KL163 but I can’t find any mention to the other aircraft AFEE had although I note that the issued serial range was only from KL162 to KL167.
The colour scheme appears to be Dark Earth / Dark green uppers with Yellow and black stripes underneath. The nose art and position of the serial is interesting.

I do not have my notes handy but I think there may have been a very early Contrail vacform of this in 1/72

Yeah the paint scheme on the model you’ve got is a bit wrong 😀
I’ve already sent you the *tiny* photo of the CG-13 with the RAF roundels on it that I found but I haven’t seen any other yet…
BTW, I’ve got all the Hadrian pictures scanned finally and only got two of your Horsa drawings to go 🙂
