Waddington airshow

Can anybody give information about the photo circomstances at Waddington during the airshow? Is there a “clean” static, what is the distance between crowdline and runway (what lens is needed) and, “where” is the sun?. I am looking for an alternative for Fairford and Waddington is mentioned as one of the best, but I have never been there.

Hi JMan,

Yes there is a Travelodge/Travel Inn quite close to Waddington, but it has been fully booked for the Airshow Weekend for months. Tried to book someone in there only the other day, and was told that there were no vacancies at all. May I suggest that you try to get accommodation at a pub called the Marquis of Granby in Wellingore village, which is not that far away from Waddo, (about 3 miles). Just off the Main road. The pub serves excellent food, although the restaurant does get busy and pre-booking is wise, the pub has a nice atmosphere too. I always stay there for the Airshow.

Not suggesting they have any vacancies either, but you never know, and well worth a try…Phone 01522 810442 or e-mail Marquisofgranby@aol.com. Hope this helps.
Best of luck. 😀

Regards
Keith

It’s on waddington airshow site. Anyone know any accomodation nearby? I seem to remember a travel lodge very close by.

Its an Isaacs Fury and will be flown into Waddington by Pete Metcalfe, owner and display pilot of Denny’s former Pitts G-BIRD.

Interesting that there’s a Hawker Fury down as being owned by Denny Dobson. Presumably that’s the Fury 1 replica, ex-Robert Landuit?

And I thought I was the one who was late with the cornflakes 😀

It’s the Canadair CL44-O Guppy. The one that used to be with HeavyLift many, many, years ago and is now registered 9G-LCA.
It’s also been N447T and 4K-GUP so it’s been around.

Rumours were, that it was at Southend and would not fly again. But hey, that’s just rumours!!

Anyone know any different?

I’m sorry it’s far to early in the morning for this, what aircraft are we talking about here?

Don’t Waddington realise that if said aeroplane actually gets there, it won’t be serviceable enough to leave for months!!

This will be fantastic, if it gets there. Where is it at the moment? Last I heard it was at Southend.

Thanks for pointing that out DOUGHNUT, if this one turns up then I’m definately going.

RE: Waddington Airshow

Apparently the Marineflieger Tornado IDS had thrust reverser problems, and couldn’t slow down enough, so the pilot braked, and then they locked up or sopmething and were over heated, so he had to take the arrestor wire. The aircraft couldn’t be moved for a while because the brakes were red hot and couldn’t be handled.

That’s what they said on the radio anyway! I think there should have been a back up plan so the show could go on with helo’s or V/STOL aircraft without a big delay. But hey, I enjoyed the show.

Tell me more about the F-4 display, as I will be seeing it on this weekend at Gilze-Rijen.

RE: Waddington Airshow

The tornado, had brake problems on landing, and had to use the emergancy arrestor system butilt into the runway after that it breaks sizied at the end of the runway and had to be cleared before the programmme could be resumed, however the helos and STOl aircraft could continue flying.

Did anyone else see the C-130 taking off with the wind? Not many A/C can do that or like to that from what I was told.

I will have to get my pics developed and scanned in.

Being my first airshow in about 13 years, it was intersting for me, I didnt really appricate the amount of noise the jets throw out, I was also suprised at how close the fast jets got to the crowd line, but Im not complaning it was good fun.

I have to say the Merlin HC.3 was probally one of the best displays there. I would like to have seen some more of the RAF inventory but have to accept most were probally on operations abroad or something.

RE: Waddington Airshow

Yeah, saw that too, very optimistic, anyone know what the deal with the Marineflieger Tornado was, I commented to my amigo that on landing he came in way too fast and touched down a long way down the runway, never heard the thrust reversers kick in, next minute there is an almighty delay in the flying program and some, from my position at least, indecipherable comment from the tannoy about the plane stuck on the runway, anyone able to clarify?

RE: Waddington Airshow

Certainly was a great show!!! Best bits for me were the MiG-29 and the Gripen… seeing as I’ve never seen them fly before… Mind you, I never saw an F-4 fly until today either!!

Hey, the Germans tempted fate too much aswell!!! On the tail of a static Phantom was written “Soccer World Champions 2002”.

Get some good pictures of the Rhinos if you can Dazza. I’d appreciate it. 🙂 Man, you are so lucky. Those big air shows the sole reason I wished I lived in Europe sometimes. I’ll probably never get to see another flying Phantom at this rate.

I am off to duxford on the 5th may- whats going on there, for the airshow- I havent been to duxford fro an airshow for years- the blenheim flew the last time I was there!( I think it was about 9 years ago!
