Wales Aircraft Museum – Rhoose

I’ve scanned through the threads here using the search facility but cannot find anything much about this museums history and demise.

Does anyone know why it closed please?

Wales certainly lost a large representative of Historic Aviation when it disappeared all those years ago. Thanks.

The final items in the collection were scrapped in 1998 which were the three USAFM loan airframes.

Details on below SWAG Page

It closed as the land was too valuable to the airport

Thanks for your comments. I recall being their for about four weekends in 1984 helping where I could after they took delivery of my Provost.
The museum seemed to be well run and and a large group of enthusiasts were helping with the cafe etc.

The Proctor that I had in exchange was stored in a large shed on the Trostre British Steel Facility at Llanelli.
I dismantled it and towed it all back by trailer to my parents smallholding at Tumble, Cross Hands using a Ford Escort Van Mk 1!

Definitely mid-1990s – Vulcan XM569 was still listed as a complete survivor at Rhoose in a Vulcan book I have from 1993, around the time when XH558 was retiring first time around.

If this is the one adjacent to Cardiff airport, it was still open in 1991, as I was on my HGV driving course at St Athans and visited it s few times and took several photographs.

Was originally called South Wales Historic Aircraft Preservation Society, I recall Dewi Jones and Dave Broadley on my visits as active members with regular exhibits at local schools. They managed to get a few aircraft under cover at RAF St Athan before the use of open ground by Rhoose airport.

Went a few times, others will remember but lack of man power, poor restorations, see air, corrosion, lack of money, forced move, redevelopment of land at a guess.

From memory it closed sometime in the early 1980s – Newark acquired their Sea Venom WW217 from Rhoose in December 1983!
