It’s quite obvious that nobody at Key gives a stuff about this forum.
There are now another 60-ish pages – and counting – since Peter gave up in despair.
Sheer genius on the part of Key Publishing.
All they’re bothered about is the Key.Aero site, which I never even glance at, and everything else is ignored.

Never mind the Mods ‘teeth’, they just need the ‘KEYS’

“Looking in late afternoon Monday and the site is clear of spam. For an organisation that works office hours, I feel that is not unreasonable considering the situation only began Friday evening”
I am afraid that kind of lame thinking just won’t wash! If the forum were set up suitably with proper access for the moderators to act, most of it would never have appeared in the first place.
“……I can’t help but wonder how other forums with moderators who have proper tools could have dealt with the onslaught.”
Relatively easily I would expect; with the proper access and tools (which are included and made available to mods on all ‘ready-made’ forums), the moderation team can spot the spammers early on and delete their accounts well before things get out of hand. The fact the Peter and any other mods there may still be don’t have access to these things meant that the situation got very out of hand very quickly on here.
Unless Key actually give the mods the necessary ‘teeth’, or the webmaster stays online and alert at all times (including at the weekend), this weekend’s situation will repeat time and time again.

Bravo to those who put in the hard yards to clear out the rubbish, but I can’t help but wonder how other forums with moderators who have proper tools could have dealt with the onslaught.
Thank you.

The forum will go in whatever direction people want it to go, and if contributors are interested in it flourishing, then it can. It would certainly help if Key would delegate powers to a few people to help keep it in shape.
Contrary to Moggy’s observation whilst blowing through to say ‘farewell’ for some reason, it is not ‘patently dying’ , and this seditious sentiment is not very helpful, or appreciated by those with an interest in maintaining and building the content of the forum.
Forum history, ancient and more recent, is in the past, and what is done is done. There are plenty of people who still think a Historic Aircraft forum can give value, interest and enjoyment. It is not the same as before, and it does not have to be. Onwards and upwards !

What is noteworthy is the deafening silence from those who ‘run’ this forum.

Well done to everyone who made it possible to read the forum again.Moggy i still owe you a drink ,hopefully sooner than later .

Looking in late afternoon Monday and the site is clear of spam. For an organisation that works office hours, I feel that is not unreasonable considering the situation only began Friday evening.
As for ‘Scrooge’s’ comments regarding how easy it is to join, I find that every time I come on to post I have to circumnavigate the need to be a subscriber (living outside the UK I cannot get paper copies, while the cheaper and very convenient e-mag is only available via a third party, not Key). If it wasn’t for the the fact that I was posting member before the big changes with my username/password stored in my PC, I could no longer participate. Being signed-on only seems to last around 2-3 weeks then I have to go through the rigmarole of signing in again. User friendly this site is not.
Sorry to read that ‘Moggy C’ has given up, being one of the few on here to know the significance of the Stork Hotel in the 60s and the meetings of Air Britain Liverpool Branch there. So another break with the past, although I hope that he is aware that through the North West Air News Forum’s nostalgia section that the spirit of that group lives on today.

I guess the only point of pride in this whole debacle is that History Aviation was the ONLY forum the spammers targeted … for the unfortunate reason that it is the only forum that has ANY life left in it, at all.
By: StrikeEagle492 - 31st January 2022 at 13:01
I wonder how long it’s been since anyone posted anything about historic aviation on this forum?
I posted some photos of a new restoration in the air last week that was buried under pages of spam, and people moaning about spam…

Somebody is finally on it.
The total forum page-count is coming down quite quickly – over 50 pages less since I first checked by hovering the mouse pointer over the last page button 10 minutes or so ago.
By: Moggy C - 31st January 2022 at 11:36
Well chaps. Despite the treatment I received from Key this gives me no pleasure at all. It was a great place once, now it is patently dying.
There is no substitute unfortunately. Nothing that will match up to the Forum in its heyday.
So here’s to The Stork Hotel. Here’s to Burma. And here’s to all those who made this place what it once was.
I haven’t posted a ‘farewell’ before as I was pretty certain it would have been zapped; being a friend of Andy is a recipe for instant sanction here. Now it would be a strange irony if this post alone disappeared.
Peter / Bruce, I really do feel for you.
Moggy.

Based on what dhfan said in the initial post on this thread, one presumes that there now are some 120 pages of spam on the historic aviation forum. Compare that to the fact that there seem only to be seven spam posts on other forums – five on modern military aviation and two on airshows. Perhaps that indicates that whilst this forum is being killed by spam, the others are now, to all intents and purposes, dead – and thus the spammers don’t consider it worth wasting their time posting on those.

After Key’s sabotage a while back, when so many of our friends cleared off, it is, I guess, finally dead. I suppose some people, who are not interested in forums for aviation enthusiasts, will be pleased. It’s tragic. The rats can spread unhampered now.

You wouldn’t be able to find it even if they did.
