Phil

You need to be aware that the landowner will not permit digging on the airfield and he is adamant about that.

Even better than the ‘phone number, here’s a link. This only for Scotland and Wales apparently, but it would appear there is a wealth of photographs here including Luftwaffe photos. MUST be something similar in England! Have a Google amongst yourselves I’m off to walk the doggie. TTFN 😉

I was being rather frivolous chaps! Up here, north of Hadrian’s wall, we have the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland- hereafter the RCAHMS : they can supply copies of Aerial photographs at various prices depending on size and type of photograph you require, and in varying detail, from surveys carried out from the late 1940’s onward. There may be a similar source in England for the airfield you are researching. A couple of my copy prints show local airfields in their entirety from a sortie in June 1947 where there exists now only a few sections of runway tarmac.
The phone number of the RCAHMS is 0131 662 1456 : I’m sure they’d steer you towards a similar source of Crown Copyright air photographs in England.
A4 Photocopies were only a few pence, whereas contact prints were quite pricy, going back over ten years. Google Earth is fine but it doesn’t show you what once was there before the bulldozers and developers!

The only trouble with the Time Team suggestion is that they only have three days….still the Saxon pottery shards might be really exciting…. Yawn…

Phillip,
The current GE images show a number of soil/crop marks in the area occupied by the former RAF Lissett. Some are clearly natural, but a number are clearly of human origin. You might try taking the GE image to the Archaeological Dept at yr local Uni. They should be able to advise on the most likely spots. Unless the stuff was very deeply buried then some evidence might be apparent on the surface by Field-Walking techniques.
Other than that you might be into a Ground Penetrating Radar survey! If you don’t have access to those facilities then I’m sure “Time Team” would love to dig up a whole WW2 Airfield!

Looking for the aircraft dump Phillip are you?

Cheers

Cees

No, just the contents of RAF Lissett – dumped in a hole when the base closed or when No.158 Squadron moved out in 1945. All I know is that the incident was seen from a public road. If I find out where the RAF secured sand for their sandbags, then this might prove a possible location.
