WANTED: PTR-175 / ARC-52 Cable (42 way)

Hi all, I’m begging a bit here… Looking for some cheap to free help to construct a new Cockpitfest display for 2016 (planning ahead). Looking for cheap-to-free as I’m currently on a spending ration on anything aero related…

Request:

I’m trying to find Qty x2 of the cables that connect the main aircraft radio unit (PTR-175 or ARC-52) to the radio system interconnecting box.

Reason:

I’m hoping to put together another radio demonstrator for the next cockpitfest, alongside the helmet display.

I did one a few years ago, but I borrowed it (after having constructed it for them) from the Lightning group at Cranfield (XS458). So I need this cable for this alternative and simpler fest-going rig! The last time I showed the Lightning one, people did enjoy wearing a headset / helmet and listening to the REAL sounds of a 1960’s jet! An uncommon experience! See my previous radio display: https://www.scottbouch.com/ptr175.html – This shows the complexity of the Lightning setup, most aircraft using the Interconnecting box had a much simpler setup, which I wish to replicate.

The reason I need two cables is that I know someone else who is also trying to construct a similar demonstration / test rig too – he helped me out with an interconnection box, so I want to return the favour for his rig.

Radio TR Unit

I also don’t yet have a radio unit, so if anyone has a spare PTR-175 (Not PTR175A – which his the 400Hz AC version) they’d let go, please let me know… I remember the days when you’d see them for £5 / £10 at aerojumbles.. Sellers are ripping people off on ebay right now with vintage aero parts (in my opinion).

Cable Description:

These cables have 42 pin Amphenol circular connectors, two of the pins are bigger than the rest. Most aircraft would have had this cable as a stanalone harness enclosed in a brownish / reddish corrugated plastic “Superflexit” conduit going straight from the radio to the interconnecting box.

Ideally I’d like to find a complete harness as described above, but if it comes to it, will take a pair of cut off connectors (beggars can’t be choosers), and making up the cable myself if it comes to it.

I know that the Lightning had the harness wired in individual cores, and it went between the PTR-175 and the AF Unit (instead of interconnecting box).

These nice images illustrate the cable in a Canberra with ARC-52 radio (from: http://www.bywat.co.uk/equip/radio1.html):

And in a diagrammatic sense, the radio is highlighted in a deep red, and the cable is in a brighter red:

Here is the Interconnecting Box I have, which gives me the opportunity to share images of the connector that the cable I need mates with:

It’s the bottom left (blue Amphenol) connector with the two bigger pins. So, I’m after the cable to mate with this conenctor at one end, and the PTR-175 or ARC-52 radio unit at the other end.

The connector on the radio unit has the same pin layout, but I can’t remember if it’s male or female.

Here are some more images with measurements:

Intercom Amplifier:

I’d also be interested in an Intercom Amplifier type A.1961 (valve version) or A.1961M (transistorised version) and JB-154.

Any idea as to what ARI number this system would have been assigned?

I’m not sure, as I don’t have a concise list of ARI’s and descriptions, but here’s a list I found in an AP which references the relative AP’s.. This above Canberra installation will be one of the UHF ARI’s due to it being an ARC-52 installation.

Thanks, Scott
