A long, long time ago, I had a copy of a book called “War Machines”, which basically told of the development of various weapons through history, on land, sea and, of course, air.
I don’t remember much about the book itself (not least the author of it), but one thing has stuck in my head about it: inside the front cover of the book, spread across two pages, was the most stunning colour photo of a Spitfire taking off.
So what? I hear you cry. Well, the Spitfire in the photo was a Mk.IX painted up in Battle of Britain film markings: I think it was CD-B, but could be wrong. I also seem to recall it had two “kill markings” underneath the windshield.
I’d be interested to see whether anyone on the forum could come up with a copy of the image!!
