Warbird beat up of Elstree

Was talking to a family member yesterday who saw what he described as a loud, large radial engined ww2 fighter plane make a fast pass over Elstree, late in the morning on Monday 4th October.
He’s aching to find out what it was, asked if I knew what it was, but, I wasn’t even in the country then  , but I said that there’s a pretty good chance somebody on the Flypast forum will know……. 😀

Anybody help with warbird movements that day……????

Could be TFC’s Hellcat – that produces a whistle at high speeds.

Lowtimer – the leg’s fine now ta. Happily running on it again. Lesson number one in the Yak world seems to be; pay attention to the driver, he knows how high up the wing is… 😉

La-5, Ki-100, Firebrand?

Mike,
now you’re getting very silly.
You know we were only told off for silliness just the other day.
You’ll be saying Boeing XF8B-1 next or even Curtiss XF14C-2 😀 😀 😉 😉 😀

Are you sure it was radial engined?? Or could there have been a Merlin lurking in there?

Not likely to be the RNHF Sea Fury on the way back to Yeovilton?

😀 😀

That was my first thought, especially as he said the sound had a distinct whistlling noise……but then I remember it wasn’t Monday of this week but the week before so guessed it wasn’t the Sea Fury on the way back from Duxford….. 😉

Just a thought, but Yak 52’s / 50’s are loud, radial engined and can look very much like WW2 fighters compared to your average spamcan.

Steve,

It’s only loud on the inside! Honestly… if you hear four or five Lycoming engined types fly overhead, or climb out from the end of the runway while you listen from the pub in the village, and then hear a Yak rumble over, it’s a lot less prominent than the Arrows and Pittses of this world. Big slow-tunring prob and big exhaust manifolds, relatively even flow of exhaust gases.

Inside though as you know, it’s a VERY noisy eroplane.

How’s the foot coming on, then? 😀
