Was just browsing an article in Flypast about the restoration of Spitfire XVI TE392, and noticed that two of the crew of the camera-ship B-25 were women (Gretchen Palmer and Averille Dawson).
Apart from those two, Carolyn Grace, Elly Sallingboe and Sue Parrish (who flew the pink P-40 currently at Kalamazoo), what other aviation personalities of the fairer sex are associated with warbirds??
(Apologies if this has been covered before!)

Converse’s mother’s plane was ‘The Huntress’ and set a record flying from Denver to Colorado Springs and back….a record that Converse himself broke in his P-51 ‘Huntress III’ about 15 years ago….but I believe his mother flew an A-26, if I recall correctly….
To get Martin Caidin’s take on the whole women in warbirds situ….”I’m all for women in flying…I always have room in my plane for 110 pounds of recreational equipment….”
Not very PC these days….but Caidin, like Hunter S. Thompson, WAS’NT very PC….thank god…

Ah,Elly Protheroe was the woman I was thinking of flying the B25.I was under the impression she flew the DOB AF’s B25 rather than Grumpy, but my grey matter isn’t as reliable as it used to be!

Mustang owner Bob Converse’s mother Dianna (Bixby) flew a Mosquito (N1203V) in a round the world attempt (twice I think) and was later killed in an A-20 crash in 1955.

Did anyone mention the other Elly who needs no introduction.
There’s also Shelila Scott-not a warbird pilot, but an accomplished civil aviatrix who piloted her Piper Comanche ( I think) around the globe-solo.
It was indeed – PA24 – 260 Comanche B G-ATOY, no longer airworthy, following a crash at Elstree in 1979 (according to Air Britain).

And not to forget all the female auxillary pilots of WWII… They flew everything including the big four engined aircraft.

If ex-ww2 Piper Cubs tell, one could add Christaine Devleminck who owned, ran and was test chief pilot at Grimbergen during my childhood.
I have been told taht she was a ferry pilot in the RAF during WW.2

Not sure whether she’s ever flown warbirds as such, but Jo McDonald down at Clacton is a fabulous instructor on the Super Cub, and I couldn’t even guess at how many tailwheel conversions she’s responsible for. So perhaps she deserves an honourary pat on the back for helping to keep the supply of tailwheel pilots flowing…

I can’t remember her name, but I’m certain there was a female Chief Pilot on the Duke of Brabant B25 in the mid-90’s.
I’m curious as to who that could be! I was technical crew on that aircraft in ’93/’94 so I ought to know about that I guess :p
