Warmed over TSR-2 threads maybe:

Reading articles recently into the demise of the project I noted several very pointed questions being asked by authors on the whole aspect of the British aircraft Industry, Service aspirations and government action and wondered if the forums members would now, with the advantage of hindsight like to comment on these questions. Personally I have my own opinion on these matters which broadly falls into the category of those voiced shortly after the incident in that the British Government was in some way in agreement with the idea that a fundamental lack of faith in the capabilities of the industry to deliver the goods would eventually lead too cancellation anyway in favour of the F111 sop on offer from the US, anyway the questions.

To what extent was the management structure of the newly formed BAC to blame for the failure of the project.?

To what extent did international & Domestic politics play a part in the cancellation.?

How did inter service rivalry impact the design process and was this detrimental.?

Did Labour have an agenda that they pursued even at great cost to the UK’s aerospace industry?

What impact might the cancellation have had on the UK’s image abroad?

Was cost really the issue it was made out to be considering that an initial £127 million had been spent on the process and though considered a prime defence project the whole was indeed on a ‘Slow Burn’ to completion with a decade being the envisaged too completion.?

Just a few of many that have be asked over the years.

I have bumped into bits of TSR-2 on my travels,

Ejector seat at FAST in Farnborough

Seat and canopy in Midland Air Museum

Undercarriage door and wing section at Newark air museum

Cockpit section at Brooklands (Gutted)

Cockpit guage at Doncaster Museum

About three years ago an instrument from the BAC cockpit mock up went on E-bay for a mild amount:eek: .

I bet there is more around if truth be told.

John.

Thanks for that post John, seems there is more of the TSR floating around than some cared to admit.

Interesting text is published in series in MAM magazine and the article is “What If” type. Here you are one image to illustrate this very interesting topic 🙂
