News of this tragic accident at Frazier Lake in California last week doesn’t seem to have made it to this side of the Atlantic.
I thought I would flag it up as yet another a reminder to those of us here who are around live aeroplanes to NEVER be complacent. Frazier Lake is one of my favourite airports and is, I believe, the only turf runway in California. The mower driver was a very experienced pilot himself, including high-performance taildraggers such as the P-51, so was well aware of the limitations of view on landing. The Ryan pilot, flying in from another local airport, made several radio calls. The mower driver was, I understand, equipped with a hand-held radio. And yet still the accident happened.
Thoughts are with my friends at Frazier Lake at this sad time.
Be careful, aeroplanes can bite at any time!
