Warplane leaves Biggin Hill 1992

I saw this huge thing being driven past my window one day so I went out with my video camera and took this footage.

What can you guys tell me about what’s going on and what the plane is and where is it now?

I know some info (well, very little actually) but let’s see what you come up with.

Thank god that policeman was there to sort things out. It’s ok, he moved his bike just in time!

A bus came along and had to be backed into someone’s drive (and the van)

Oh, and don’t forget the low branches and telephone lines to contend with

They look SO big on British roads

Ah yes, down by the houses with the BIG hedges

now there’a sight you don’t see these days –

a policeman on a pushbike !!

those were the days

joking aside, interesting, very interesting

You should come around my way. We regularly see Coppers on bikes. They even wear cool looking shades these days.

Its the ‘4’.
This one was being resprayed, the ‘5’ was immaculate and it would have been insane to have resprayed it IMHO.
The ‘4’ had been a racer, and was a lighter blue, I recall it carried a victory symbol of a Sea Fury…..I think.
In the pic, you can make out ‘101’ on the u/c door which tallies with the Warbird Registry bio for the ‘4’ (hope that makes sense)
Every so often it was taken out of the hangar for a run up, it looked a whole lot better when it arrived at Biggin in 88, in the pics you can see the paint had been rubbed down for painting.

Firstly – apologies, my post was beaten by The Bump. One quick ID feature for Corsairs is the intakes round the cowling. Of the common types F4U-1, FG-1 don’t have one. F4U-4, F4U-7 has a chin intake (at the bottom). F4U-5 has cheek intakes – one each side at the bottom corners.

There were one of each at Biggin during the WoGB days – FG-1 Big Hog, F4U-5 N179PT and this -4

OK. I think. So…. which is the plane on the video then? Or is the jury still out?

By the way, i’m really impressed with the speed of everyones response. I thought this would run for days.:D

Returned to Fort Lauderdale, FL for sale, Mar. 1992.” That bit fits exactly with dates.

I got a bit lost with the -4 and -5 bit. Is that like the marks of spits? I have never been into Corsairs. Bit ugly. (in MY opinion only of course)

That’s the -4 isn’t it: http://www.warbirdregistry.org/corsairregistry/f4u-97280.html

Chin intake, not cheeks. And the -5 was complete and active during its time at Biggin.

That’s a late version corsair, the type they used in the korean war, with its 4 propellor blades, Pratt and Whitney R-2800-32(E), Automatic blower control, Automatic cowl flaps, all metal wings etc etc

F4U-5?

Beautiful, thanks for sharing

I could put the video clip on youtube if anyone’s interested.

Well it was heading for the south coast to be shipped somewhere. That’s all the info I know. I said I didn’t know much.
