wartime aircrew salaries/aircraft condition

Has this subject been looked at before? i just wanted to know what the salarys were for serving WW2 aircrew and also the “erks”how much time were pre flight checks/engine tests and general flying status alloted prior to sorties given the wartime conditions etc, in other words were “corners cut”or am i being naive?

I remember reading years ago a book by a Canadian in Bomber Command who was paid almost exactly double what his RAF room-mate was paid. They were both pilots of identical rank but presumably the Canadian pilot was RCAF.

The Canadian also said that the situation was ‘resolved’ by his room-mate borrowing almost exactly half the difference between their salaries every week!

I can’t remember the author / book.
