Wartime airfield Coles crane

Hi all,

Here is a picture of a project that we are just about to start work on. She’s a 1943 Series 7 Coles crane mounted on a 6 wheeled AEC Matador chassis. We have recently started to expand our museum, a former Bomber Command airfield and started up an MT section at the Metheringham Airfield Visitor Centre near Lincoln where we also have a 6 wheeled AEC fuel bowser, Queen Mary, oil bowser trailers, bomb trollies and a few other wartime airfield related bits and bobs.

We would be very grateful for assistance with the project and if anyone could kindly help us locate any other scrapped cranes that we can source parts from for an accurate restoration please. Likewise, we are always interested to hear of any wartime airfield related equipment that can be purchased for preservation at RAF Metheringham please, especially a single axle airfield caravan.

Thanks

Tim

I’m after a tractor to tug the Harvard around after it’s done. Bit too big to push around on your own. A bomb tractor would be good, or an old RAF tractor (what did they use – Fordsons?)

For David Brown’s this website / group is a good source of information http://www.dbtc.co.uk/

I believe that some sales are made at this event in November http://www.newarkvintagetractorshow.com/ plus NAM’s David Brown is sometimes displayed there as part of their remembrance / commemoration area! That tractor is still in use and was used to tow the Gnat in and out of Hangar 2 last week.

At places like Cromer there are lots of old tractors standing on the shoreline. They are used to launch and retrieve small fishing boats. Perhaps one becomes available from time to time.

Harvard, you could do with a David Brown or a Fordson Standard.

Tim,

I’m a bit short on detail and accuracy but, there is, situated in a local marina, what appears to my uneducated eye to be a WW2 bomb trolley tractor. It looks in good nick. I know the owner. If you PM me, I can, if you’re interested, pass you contact details.

He might be willing to part with it, especially if it is going to a museum for preservation.

I scratch-built a model timber-tractor Matador. The cab is nice and straight-forward, with NO double curvature.

Good luck with the project.

Thanks for the replies, I’ve tried HMVF too and had some good leads. The crane is in surprisingly good condition and having sat outside in a hedge for the last 15 years she actually runs. Once she has been in for bead blasting and painting she will look as good a new. The biggest problem is finding parts for the drivers cab but there are plenty of AEC Matadors still around.
