Wartime B17 crash in the Potters Bar area

I would like to learn about a B17 crash in WW11 near Potters Bar , the aircraft had apparently been abandoned by its crew and circled the area before eventually coming down in a field close to the village of Northaw . I do not have a date but believe it was late in the day .

Thank you for your help , my mother as a very young 16 year old with her 14 year old brother were the first to reach this aircraft the next morning , they climbed all over it and made off with their pockets full of Lifesavers and chewing gum .

I do not where exactly Foxholes Hill is , but I believe if you take the google maps link and move 4 clicks east so you have Northaw village to the west and Cuffley village to east the aircraft bellied in somewhere here . On the road between at that time there was a privately owned boarding school in a large house called Northaw House in this area , I believe it is now occupied by a London architectual company . I think it might have been close to the corner on the north side of the road . The aircraft I think came down about three fields from the house .

Foxhole Hill is just north east of Junction 24 on the M25
See: http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?x=525266&y=201780&z=120&sv=Potters+Bar&st=3&tl=Map+of+Potters+Bar+Station,+Hertfordshire+[Station]&searchp=ids.srf&mapp=map.srf
Trust that helps, but that close to M25 doubt if anything remains now!!

The only one I can find is a B-17 serial number 4231068 , from the 612th Bomb Squadron of the 401st Bomb Group (H), The crew baled out due to bad weather. The pilot was Jere W Maupin, and the aircraft crashed at Potters Bar on the 31/12/1943.
