Does anyone know if there are any records available detailing ministry contractors during the war? I am interested in finding out some details on a particular company e.g. where they were based.
Cheers for any help

AusterFan…
Thanks for that…I had actually forgotten about them repairing Typhoons (amongst other things of course). I just looked on the Auster Club Web site and they actually repaired 368 Hurricanes, 281 Typhoons, 339 Tiger Moths, 1 Hornet Moth and 11 Kirby Cadet gliders, in addition to manufacturing components for Hurricanes, Spitfires, Oxfords, Albermarles, Tiger Moths and Audax aircraft.
I tried to get some information on drawings from them a long time ago but I did not try the county archives…will try again now that I know more information.

Not sure if this is what you mean, but Auster (as Taylorcraft Auster) certainly carried out repairs etc during the war on a sub-contract basis. Leicestershire County Council holds all the archives through a guy called Peter Stoddard ( I think).

Thanks for the replies…
I will try to look for the parts catalog (not sure if it exists for the Typhoon) and look for the trade lists!!!
Did you get your list from the parts catalog Elliott?

I’d also suggest asking local public records offices, as larger companies often deposited historical records there.

You could look out for a book by Temple Press.
‘The Aeroplane (as in the magazine) Directory of British Aviation incorporating Who’s Who in British Aviation’.
I have a 1961 edition. It is a trade directory but an earlier edition would surely give you all you want to know.

I was mainly after the contractors who built sub components…one example is the pressed steel company (found out this morning that it was based on a site next to the Cowley plant and was merged with BMC in the 60s).
I am interested to find out where some of these companies were based, if they are still in operation etc.
Well, there were thousands! Are you concentrating on one particualr type of aircraft? If so, I suggest you look in the part catalogue which should have an appendix in the back of proprietary companys. I have been able to get some large wadges of drawings from companies that made Whitley parts so it is worth following up.

Hi Dave
It depends what kind of contractor you are after. I have a long list of proprietory contractors who supplied components for the Whitley. Are you more interested in those contracted to carry out repairs/overhaul etc.?
