Many years ago (mid ’80’s) I lived on a farm in Rougham, behind the barn down from the house by the duckpond was a large mainwheel with part of the undercart leg attached.
Found out it was from German plane shot down bombing the airfield about 2 miles away. I asked the son of the landowner if he would donate it to Duxford only to be told “What will they give me for it in return?” so I gave up with that line of enquiry & left the damn thing there.
Now in the years since it MAY have ended up at the Flying Fortress boozer on the old airfield….. or it may styill be laying behind that barn in the weeds….
The farm in question is Brick Kiln Farm, easy to find as all the locals hate the place (sort of hippy commune back in the day).
Farm is owned by Major Agnew rtd, local JP etc. Son is one John Agnew….
so, who’s the local aviation detective?

I know John had 1 brother & I think there’s another branch of the family that live at the other Rougham in Norfolk? The suffolk estate is at least 4000 acres all told.

Another question occurred to me: Is the airfield still part of the estate?
I believe it is part of the estate. From what someone told my father the other day, whoever is responsible now doesn’t have much interest in keeping things the way they are now and would rather turn it into money.
Let’s hope we don’t lose another airfield.

I wonder what will happen with the estate now. I don’t think John had any kids?

Sad news indeed.
We always enjoyed working with him.

I lived at Rougham in from ’83-’85 & know John. I’d heard about the Rougham airstrip deal & assumed it was something to do with Amschul Rothschild just up the road a bit.
Anyone want to light a fire under John Agnew’s butt & find out if the undercart is still there? (at the farm that is, not under his posterior…)
I know that several *peace convoy* friends of Johns used to hang out at the farm & it wouldn’t surprise me to find ouit one of em weighed it in for scrap….

Major Keith Agnew passed away some years back.
John Agnew and family own the Rougham Estate and John has fought hard for and continues to fight to keep the airstrip at Rougham open. Also, I understand that he was one of those who started the control tower museum at Rougham.
