After a grand day out with “CDP206” & “1 Group” looking at a few fields of Norfolk today, the last stop was Watton. Sad to see more of the C-Type hangars gone, only one left standing now but even more horrifying was this;
Photographed in May 2007
Photographed today
With the damage at Goxhill recently, DeHavilland Museums memorial being stolen and the paint job at the Dambusters memorial in Woodhall Spa in recent months, you have ask why? Do these people (if you class them as people) have any respect at all?
I really don’t know what to say……

Right I think seeing as the nature of the issue has been discovered, we can now bring this thread to a close. If you have any on-topic content to add, feel free to PM me.

You joined in November 2007? I’ve been here for around 6 years at a guess and in that time have seen numerous instances where people tar all with the same brush. “All travellers are scum.” “All thieves should have their hands chopped off.” “I’d give ’em a good kicking.” “Deport them.” These are the very same people who would require the full protection of the Law and the term innocent until proven guilty, until it’s someone else then they’re fair game. The discrimination that pours out of the mouths of so called educated people just has to be seen to be believed. They pour forth all kinds of bile and vitriol. Yet these are the same people who would never dream of volunteering to do a stint as security, or to join the Police, they just sit back and spout.
I’m so sorry I give a crap I really am, I’m so sorry I care enough to get upset over these matters, for your information I do alot of positive stuff however I do so quietly and without the need to broadcast it all on the web.
When I pass threw the local graveyard (4 or 5 days a week) I clean up any litter I come across in the place return any items back to the correct graves, all done from my own back simply out of respect.
Also If I walk past the local war memorial I will remove any litter – and put back any wreathes that some idiots have usually thrown around.
Finlay If I do see people causing a problem in these area’s I try to educate them as to the meanings of these places, sadly I often get told to sod off and also am told who cares – whats it got 2 do with you.
You know what I would love to provide some form of voluntary security if something could be arranged and you what maybe I would have considered a police or armed forces job but I have physical, learning and emotional disability’s that rule such a choice out.
Hey you know what I guess said disability’s mean I can claim to be having a hard life and can go around stealing , wrecking and doing as I please without any care for anyone but myself, but I have such a thing as a conscience and respect for others so I will keep quietly doing what I can when I can.

Certainly good news that it was not stolen. Have to agree with Peter, though. Continuing to bicker over the “what if it had been stolen” and “what people would like to do to the culprits” is as academic as it is futile, especially since those posts were cleaned up anyway!

I’m pleased that this is not a theft, mind you looking at the first photo you’d understand why you’d jump to that assumption.
I seem to remember an old tail about ass/u/me:rolleyes:

Fortunately, the Watton Memorials are being relocated and were not the victims of theft. However, had they been stolen, can you tell me what earthly purpose the remarks you made (since removed) would have served in the apprehension of the thieves and the return of the stolen items?
Sitting in front of your PC and acting all macho does NOTHING to prevent thefts such as those of the Salisbury Hall propeller and certainly doesn’t assist in recovery.

Well im not acting “macho”, actually i am a respectable citizen, i have campaigned for many years for what is right and what i believe in, i am amember of the air cadets and many other youth organisations.
I have the right to make my comment as well as you, now if you would like to come here and seein the damage done to local memorials i think you will follow the same way as i am thinking. As soon as i have finished my studdies i plan to join the RAF maybe the RAF police who knows.
And it doesnt matter if they give the memorial back IF they had stolen it its the principle that they had taken it in the first place!

He aims for the point, carefully lines up his shot and misses by a mile.
However, if I’m seen to be hacking away at the undergrowth and moving around this headstone, perhaps some of those with the same mindset as XH668 and andrewman may just jump to the wrong conclusion. After all they have a history of it.
Again your hacking at the undergrowth not removing the memorial
After all they have a history of it.
It doesnt seem a very extensive history when only one comment was made, i think your comment is very very unfair.
I think your taking this out of proportion!

I’m not going to be sorry for my views and that is anyone caught attacking these memeorails should after a fair trail (under full english law) be given the punsishment of chopped off hands and should be removed to a remote Island and left to rot.
Maybe many will say my views are strong or offensive but at least I have the guts to express my thoughts and I refuse to feel sorry for such thoughts.
Oh and I have some bloody good reasons why I feel so strongly but I’m not going to post them on a public forum for all to read.

Yes but at first light, looking at the pics you suspect it has been stolen/ vandalised.
look at the evidence smashed bricks e.t.c what would you first think?
Also this sort of thing does happern (it has around here) by “scum bags”
I have nothing to appoligise for!
“I might be cleaning a couple of headstones of Great War airmen in the next couple of weeks, perhaps andrewman would care to come and chop my hands off for this wanton act of vandalism?”
Your cleaning not damaging! thats the difference, im not talking about watton but im generalizing here.
I refer you to my earlier post regarding REF’s pictures…. look at the first picture, the memorial brick work is hardly in much of a better state than now, and that was before anyone started work on it.
By: kev35 - 16th March 2008 at 22:10
No I would not care to chop of your hands, but I do support it being used for those who steal – destroy memeorials, headstones etc, and you know what I will stand up for my views and my opinions.
He aims for the point, carefully lines up his shot and misses by a mile.
The fact that the Watton Memorial has been moved for resiting was automatically taken by some to have been stolen. Thankfully that’s not the case. Those same people as always tar and feather the same elements of the community. Innocent until proven guilty? Apparently not.
Yes I will be cleaning one headstone in particular which appears to be suffering terribly for being under trees, trees which happen to be home to some of the biggest wood pigeons I have ever seen. I will, of course, obtain the relevant permission before I attempt any work. However, if I’m seen to be hacking away at the undergrowth and moving around this headstone, perhaps some of those with the same mindset as XH668 and andrewman may just jump to the wrong conclusion. After all they have a history of it.
I’m sure this chap’s family would love to be able to clean the headstone, but South Africa is one hell of a commute. I suspect I shall find out more about his death when next I visit Kew. Another name to add to the long list of names for whom I would like to add flesh to the bones.
Bograt. My condolences for your recent loss.

I dont, and didnt – my point was that it is innappropriate to complain where there is no problem. In the case of genuine theft, then fire away!

I will apologise to anyone who found my post offensive, but coming at the end of a week that has seen a friend of mine killed by the actions of the driver of a white transit tipper who was towing a caravan and then left the scene of the “accident”, there will no doubt be some of you who would tend to concur with my viewpoint.

I have to agree with XH668 here. If you look closely at the first two pics then it does appear that it was not carefully removed judging by the broken bricks and missing signs etc. It is funny though as last night I was wondering why anyone would take the signs as well? Now I know. Also the displacement of the wreaths also lends credit to the chance that something criminal had been done. Noone needs to apologise at all and Thanks to KIGAS, we all know the truth now!
By: Bruce - 16th March 2008 at 14:03
I have deleted some of the more offensive posts, on the basis that the memorial hadnt been stolen.
If we discuss another example of genuine theft in the future, you will be more than welcome to restate your beliefs!

You know, it might just be an idea if those erudite, articulate and jolly nice fellows who automatically resort to the usual retort of ‘scum bags’, or blame the travelling community or even suggest that people should have their hands chopped off and be deported (even though they would most likely be English) were to issue an apology for the fact that they have jumped to the wrong conclusion.
It won’t happen of course, the simple fact that they made a collective a*se of themselves will be neatly swept under their collective carpet.
I might be cleaning a couple of headstones of Great War airmen in the next couple of weeks, perhaps andrewman would care to come and chop my hands off for this wanton act of vandalism?
