Thanks JDK

We just hope that we can get photos of all the crew one day.
The Dutch lady would love to see the man in the grave, she sees him not as a WWII Air gunner more like a brother.

Good luck!

Lancaster B.I bomber (code name AA-Q, fuselage No. Hotel Kilo 569). of 75 (NZ) Squadron RAF.

Just a quick couple of comments for precision in data – ‘HK569’ is the RAF serial number, ‘AA’ the squadron code, ‘Q’ the aircraft’s own code letter, representing them as ‘AA-Q’ is pretty standard, so that’s OK. Each term has a specific meaning, while ‘fuselage number’ and ‘code name’ don’t, and can be confused with other items (fuselage part serial, an aircraft’s specific operation code name).

Referring to Delve’s Source book of the RAF, the aircraft would’ve been known as ‘Q’ for (usually) ‘Queenie’. Certainly not the modern ‘Quebec’. For the two letters mentioned earlier, in other contexts the W.W.II crew would probably have recognised ‘Harry’ / ‘How’ ‘King’, the RAF’s alphabet changing in 1942.

‘Hotel Kilo’ is a modern (post ’56) phonetic alphabet form; I’m not aware of any normal occasion where the aircraft’s serial would be given in such form, a phonetic alphabet being used for transmissions rather than record-keeping. The normal format – certainly in writing – would just be HK569, maybe HK569 ‘Queenie’ / Q, squadrons usually having several different aircraft (each with its own serial) that bore the code letter, sometimes sequentially (replacement ‘Queenies’) very occasionally at the same time.

Anyway, use ‘HK569’ which will be much more accessible in internet searches and the like.

This is the lady that looks after the grave of Flt Sgt Hiscox and has done so for 45 years.
In the photo she is standing with 3 Air Gunners after she had recieved a large photo of a Lancaster from Air Cdr C Clarke OBE.
