We Were Soldiers

Well I just this today for the first time and boy was I moved! It reminded me of how much I hate war, and it has to be one of the best ‘anti-war’ message films I have ever seen.

Sure the action was good, and there was plenty of it, and the realism was also impressive. The air support footage was by far the best I have seen for a while, A-6s, F-4s, A-1s, and even A-4s firing their guns, etc..fantastic stuff!

BUT I believe it dealt with more of the brutal fight and the reasoning behind it (and the war as a whole) all than it had corny americanisms, and some of the scenes were very symbolic in nature. It had a VERY good coverage of the whole episode form both sides of the battle, and the reflection of soldiers and family from BOTH sides was touching and made the whole thing far more potent in film as a true story told in this way should be. Showing the fear, emotion, and personal turmoil from soldiers on the other side was well done, and made the NVA seem a lot more human than they have been depicted in Vietnam War films of the past.

Overall, I left the cinema moved, but feeling glum and depressed a little as once again the horror, futility, and madness of war was so graphically displayed and hopefully not so easily forgotten. A must see for those may be considering sending men to war.

I gave it 8 out 10!! 🙂
