DF-31A
From the NRDC Nuclear Notebook: http://www.thebulletin.org/issues/nukenotes/nd03nukenote.html
“China is also developing a modified version of the DF-31, the DF-31A. With an extended range of up to 12,000 kilometers, the DF-31A is sometimes confused with the DF-41, now canceled. Its precise range is unknown. Deployment is predicted to occur between 2006 and 2010. It may replace or supplement the DF-5A. According to the CIA, the DF-31A may be targeted against the United States and be tested “within the next several years.” With a shorter range and a lighter payload than its predecessor, the DF-31A will be less capable of penetrating a potential U.S. missile defense system.”

China notified Russia of the test launchings of DF-31, DF-41 and JL-2 recently.

This? Picked up from the pages of WMF. Cool isn’t it?
The NMD interceptors I believe are white in colour. This missile is clearly a dark colour.

Did they notify the US? If so, then we might be able to confirm for sure the designations.

There is no DF-41 designation now, as far as I have discovered. Likely to be a DF-31A, which is apprently the modified longer range version of the standard DF-31.

Could it be this?:

I’d go for Iskander (E) or whatever Chinese copy there is of this missile…

Anyone who thinks thats an ICBM isn’t really paying attention- compare the size of it to the truck in that photo. It’s too small.
By: crobato - 23rd September 2004 at 14:11
China’s northern and western frontiers could easily fit the description above.
By: edisonone - 23rd September 2004 at 14:09
But, the scenery looks so Navadaish, maybe Wyoming.
And the missile from the distance doesn’t looks very ICBMish. Could Xinhua be
running a story on the US’s NMD system and attached pics of test? All the DF’s, far as I
understand, are much larger in size the one on this pic.

DF-41 ICBM. Xinhua is state controlled news. If that’s really from Xinhua, it’s coming out from the lion’s mouth.
