Fortunate indeed.
I have seen prints of it, it’s a lovely thing. But I recall it was somebody else over on another thread that wanted images e-mailed to him, not I.

The building is right alongside the main south bound motorway a bit south of Belfast, its one of those things you notice without really noting exactly where it is ! Its a red brick building which just looks out of place for where it is. I will take better notice of location and a photo if possible when next passing !
have had a quick look at google earth and think its @ 54°31’49.05″N 5°59’58.41″W . Dont know of any bases there during the war but then you never know !

The Airfield Information Exchange forum is as good as it gets online, http://www.airfieldinformationexchange.org/community/forum.php
They also have a physical archive of anything airfield related.
There is also Controltowers.co.uk which is great for a quick reference of some towers.
The National Archives at Kew and RAFM Hendon carry the information and plans for most airfields & buildings and these would have come direct from the Air Ministry and work services etc.

Yes most military airfield buildings are built to an Air Ministry plan and design number (in the same way as aircraft or any kit really).
As an example Davidstow and Lavenham towers are Watch Office For All Commands 12779/41.
This goes for most buildings from mighty hangars to the smallest toilet blocks and wooden sheds.

Yes it had an awful weather record, particularly with fog, being on the edge of Bodmin Moor as it is. It was only used for flying for three years (not that unusual for some WWII a/fs) and there were some losses due to its location and weather.

I’m sure I have seen it somewhere that Davidstow was also the site of Aston Martin’s first win, maybe someone here can confirm?
Another almost pointless fact is that it was the highest UK military airfield, something you wouldn’t credit Cornwall with having!

Sorry it’s a bit off thread but there might be one or two interested that Davidstow was used as a race circuit including hosting an F1 race (obviously not a championship one) and that Lotus had early success there. Presumably that lovely control tower was used on the circuit?

I had forgotten about a few of those, even though they were only based at them for such a short time. I had been thinking more of Warmell which I didn’t get to see ‘sigh!’ and Matlaske which I did on another cold, drizzly and windy day.

Not much to see at Warmwell these days, the majority of it has been quarried. Though there is a memorial in the village to those who lost their lives flying from the airfield.
