Was recently speaking with a work collegue and managed to get onto my favorite subject of vintage aviation. He mentioned that the above Wellington crashed in the area that he walks his dogs in Heiloo, Westerweg, The Netherlands, on Sept.17th 1942. The aircraft was piloted by Sgt. W.J. Nobbs and he and his crew were shot down and killed. I understand they were buried
at a local church.
He has asked me if i might be able to find a little more about the crew and the aircraft.
Secondly, the local farmer has over the years found a few aircraft type parts, (but at present cannot remember where he put them!) and whilst walking his dog my friend has come across following 2 items; A General Electric “made in England” spark plug part 7 cms long, and a metal bolt 30 cms long, see the photo’s below.
The exact crash site has been lost over time and if these items might have come from a Wellington rather than an old tractor then the site might have been relocated.
I look forward to hearing from some of the Wellington experts for their thoughts….

Could be the remnants of a 5C/366 cockpit lamp

I have asked my friend to clean the above items and it seems now that one of the items is indeed a light bulb socket with the remains of a lightbulb in it. There seems to be no other obvious markings on the items. Would parts such as lightbulb sockets have Air Ministry markings and if so would it be as simple as the stamp A.M.? My friend wondered whether the heavy bolt might have been from something such as either an undercarriage or from the same tractor that the light bulb now appears to have come from! I’ve asked for him to send photo’s of any more parts that look like they might have come from a Wellington, but for the time being it looks like the crash sight is still to be located again.

Hi D.B.
Looking at the new photo it does look like it could be a light bulb socket. As Whitley says look for any AM markings

Here are a couple more photo’s of the above items. Could you advise of the best way to clean the items or remove a little of the surface corrosion to try to find a reference number, then i’ll pass that onto my friend. I guess that General Electric have supplied parts to Wellingtons – as well as many other types of aircraft, and probably tractors too?!

It looks like a light bulb or valve to me… If it’s an Air Ministry item there should be a reference number on the other side.

Hi D.B.
Is it possible to take some more photos of the item shown in the first photo, showing the complete item and an edge on view showing the part with GEC stamped on it. Might be able to get a better idea what it could be. I may be wrong but it doesnt look like a spark plug.
