I’ve been away the last couple of days for a quiet weekend with my wife in north Devon, when out walking along the famous Tarka Trail we came across this unexpected memorial. The memorial is located outside of a small town called Bideford which is a few miles south of Barnstable, Has anyone got any more information on the incident, as it’s the first I’ve heard of it.

There was a pretty impressive Wellington with a jet engine in the rear fuselage used by Power Jets at Bruntingthorpe, however i’m a long way from my ‘Aviation in Leicestershire and Rutland’ book so can’t give anymore details. Of course, the post war Vickers Viking and Valetta was based on the Wellington as well, using the undercarriage and wings

Wellington production details cover 7 pages in the Putnam book “Vickers Aircraft since 1908” by C F Andrews so there is obviously far more information than can be given on this Forum!
I suggest you get hold of a copy – you could borrow mine, but would have to come to Sweden, as I won’t let it out of my sight!

Engine cut on take off. Hit building and crashed into a field at Bideford, Devon. Destroyed by fire. All those killed are buried in Brookwood Military Cemetery, Surrey.
